Sex for fun and non-procreation!

In this world, we can't get away from religion. We've been exposed to false information regarding contraception failure rates and experienced the STD scare tactics. Some of us may even have gone through abstinence-only sex education!

Here in Secular Sexuality we will discuss:

-sexual health in light of peer-reviewed science
-safe for work guides on safe(r) sex (or links)
-questions that would shock the religious

Dallas, I haven’t read The Invention of Heterosexuality but I agree with the basic premise that dichotomous thinking is faulty and stupid: good and evil, light and dark, straight and gay.

The ancient Romans and Greeks definitely made no distinction about the latter: the Romans even had a term for a young Greek boy imported for sexual delights of Patrician oldsters. I believe it was Claudius that said, “He’s more timid than a newly arrived catamite.”

The Spartan homoioi (the equals) were known to encourage brotherly love in order to maximize the group bond. They were about the best fighters the world ever knew.

Mark Anthony had brothels all over Rome figuring “anything goes.” I can imagine what that was like.

The fact is that it’s not a question of black and white, but a continuum. Freud was the first to bring out the “polymorphous perversity” of the id. If people would realize that it’s all a shade of gray, they would get along a lot better.

A troll is usually a loser who spends his/her time finding forums to disrupt. In places like this it's usually someone who joins a group they disagree with just so they can scream about how evil/stupid/disgusting we are. They usually can't spell worth a damn.

Had to join this one! I'm a little afraid of these trolls I heard about though! :-)

I never ever ever understood the ban on stem cell research. I can understand how someone who either believes in the soul or is ignorant of the rate of fetal development and the fact that people have uncharacteristically early births for mammals would be against abortion, but as it's legal, why they would go ahead and ban stem cell research is just alien to me. Why is disposing of a fetus more dignified than using it to save lives?

Obama has now vacated the Bush order prohibiting any sex education funds for countries that allow abortion on demand. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Parts of the world are over-populated for their resources as it is (e.g. the Brazilian rain forest is disappearing) we don't need a president whose fundamentalist beliefs and election debts to the likes of Falwell prohibit people from having more children. Obama also put the skids on the anti-stem cell research restrictions of the Bushies. Hey, maybe they will cure my leukemia in my own lifetime! "God" would probably HATE that.

Dallas Gaytheist- I met my current boyfriend on I'm insanely in love with him but am unsure if the site is actually that good or if I picked a gem out of a pile of turds. Worth a shot though!

I was raised as a Catholic and was suffered from misinformation about sex for quite some time.

Come to think of it, I actually was going to wait before marriage! Now that's blasphemous!
Comment by Rikka on December 8, 2008 at 10:21pm
I just had almost an hour conversation with an 18 year old girl who has a boyfriend to whom I had to explain pretty much everything sexual from fingering to "yes, getting wet is normal, nothing is wrong".

Why would anyone ever want to damage someone by keeping them THAT ignorant?! The poor girl!
