Culture Warriors vs. Sex for Pleasure: Why the Right Wing is Wrong ...

Laura Riscol compares sex for pleasure with "the bitchy fragility of Limbaugh and O’Reilly".

Making sure there’s no such thing as consequence-free sex is what unites theocons against both gay and reproductive rights, even masturbation, which the anti-choice American Life League calls the “gateway drug.”

Like tax cuts for the economy and bombing for security, abstinence-only-unless-married is the conservative movement’s magic potion for social stability, the silver bullet to slay the sexual dragon we call freedom.

...sexual debates—reduced to purity vs. perversion, abstinence vs. condoms, monogamy vs. infidelity, good vs. evil—remain reliable fodder to divide and conquer. Advocates of sexual sanity working to shift the story from rhetoric to reality are scapegoated, demonized and marginalized.

...GOP contender Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum ... boldly stands against sexual freedom and the “dangers of contraception in this country.” [emphasis mine]

I really feel that this points back to what religion is really useful for; controlling the masses. The truth is, they love the idea of pregnant teens marrying boyfriends they barely know and being unable to get an education to improve their condition. They like to call these people parishioners. Sex without great risk is the single greatest threat to their power.

Their biggest fears are people that have control over their own reproduction because it allows them to focus on and think for themselves instead of spending all of their time and resources on raising children.

The wealthy need the poor to support the establishment, so they align themselves with the religious right, even when they detest them just as much as anyone else. It really is a modern day feudal system that must be rejected at every level. Sorry for beginning to rant.

"The wealthy need the poor to support the establishment,...."

Jason, a sociologist told me the middle class protects the wealthy from the poor. He explained by saying the existence of the middle class offers the poor a hope that they can better their lot without violence.

Those of the wealthy who are relying on the GOP to destroy the middle class don't know history.

Interesting point, Tom.

Jason, you're not ranting. You're stating the reality of the situation. What struck me about the article was the lead in line. If prescribing to dogmatic absolutes worked, then the most conservative Christian red states wouldn’t have the highest rates of teen pregnancy, divorce and porn consumption. To that I would add, illiteracy, poverty, infant mortality, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Ignorance breeds fear, which in turn breeds hatred, which in turn breeds self destruction. I must confess, I never looked at it from the viewpoint of a "feudal" system. But, I have to admit, there is merit in that viewpoint. Keep the great unwashed masses down, steal their wealth, and have them hate  those who wish to lift them out of their misery. Sure fire winning combination for their politico/corporate masters.

I love the porn consumption bit, too.  Apparently Utah is the highest consumer of internet pornography in the country.
