Scriptural Criticism

This group will do more than just pick apart biblical errors and contradictions. Let's closely examine the Bible and Qur'an. Nothing is sacred; every prophecy, proverb, and parable deserves examination and critique.

Good resource for an introduction to biblical studies. The author of the site is a theologically conservative Christian, so beware of bias.
Early Christian Writings
This is a great place to access the non-canonical Christian texts, including the writings of the early church fathers and the Gnostics.
Quran Explorer
This is a pretty cool web app that allows you to read and search the Quran online. You'll need Arabic fonts if you want to read the Arabic version.

So I already got the KJV for the kindle, they are now going to put out a version of the NRSV for kindle. I'm doing some research for a project I'm working on examining christian art. Is the NRSV worth getting or is there a better version as in a good translation?

Jo J. - Here's a link to the site: http://printkjv.ifbweb.com/#printing
You can download in one zipped Word file, or a zipped file of individual books.
They also have it in txt format.
I wish they had NIV too, but it's still under copyright.

Chuck S - Where did you download it from? I know someone looking for just such a bible version so he too can make notes in the margins. I think he's set on a hardcopy, but a Word format might be the next best thing.
Chuck S Comment by Chuck S on October 15, 2010 at 4:00am
I downloaded a KJV bible with wide margins in Word format from teh interwebs. In the margins I make notations about atrocities, contradictions, scientific inaccuracies, and other stupidiocy. I recently came across instances of "wave offerings". The Hebrews would slaughter an animal then wave it at god. LOL! You've got to love this stuff sometimes!

My friend Alexander from savetheworldfree.ning posted this message to a fundaMENTAList on his website...

Thank you for your message about your Gods word. However you may have been misled, read on...

If you want to get a better handle on truth, and have an awakening you may have to reconsider the traditional religious word of god message.

I have discovered a sick agenda behind religion which is keeping the people of this beautiful earth spiritually divided.

If you want to preach truth I would teach my brothers, sisters and neighbors, that the only place spiritual truth can be found is in ones own heart, not in any church or book of the world.

People who preach anything else are doing the work of a fool. In my experience with loving your fellows.

In this world there is no evil one really, no devil, no almighty God, just an absence of Love and respect for your fellow travelers on the journey.

Peace
Richard J Comment by Richard J on July 2, 2009 at 11:12pm
Yes. I've started the journey - reading the Bible that it. It's the first time I've really read it, other then being in Catholic religious knowledge class at school (before "losing my religion" love that song!) where they cherry picked it. I can see real parallels between god and Saddam Hussein. Both killed people on a whim when the people made them angry.

I just finished Exodus last night, and I have to say that god is very blood thirsty. The temple in Jerusalem must have stunk. They were commanded to sacrifice something ("from flock or herd") every day and sprinkle blood all around the alter. Yuck!

Also, the Levite clan gets to be the priests, and they are commanded to keep a portion of the sacrificial animals for themselves. AND, god says that all the Israelites must pay atonement in cash to the temple. With all that daily income, it's no wonder they were not allowed to charge interest. That would have meant that someone other than the priests could make money!!

It all sounded like the whole text was written by the priests themselves, and then there's the completely petulant attitude of god himself!! Don't get me started!!
Karrick Comment by Karrick on July 1, 2009 at 1:24am
The strongest way to learn the real truth of the bible is to merely read it, again, and again, and again.
Chris Odom Comment by Chris Odom on September 13, 2008 at 1:15am
A Theology group on an atheist site! Awesome! Textual criticism is always fun and it has a delicious habit of souring relations with believers who happen to have been spoon-fed their religion. I look forward to contributing here.
