Scriptural Criticism

This group will do more than just pick apart biblical errors and contradictions. Let's closely examine the Bible and Qur'an. Nothing is sacred; every prophecy, proverb, and parable deserves examination and critique.

My friend Alexander from savetheworldfree.ning posted this message to a fundaMENTAList on his website...

Thank you for your message about your Gods word. However you may have been misled, read on...

If you want to get a better handle on truth, and have an awakening you may have to reconsider the traditional religious word of god message.

I have discovered a sick agenda behind religion which is keeping the people of this beautiful earth spiritually divided.

If you want to preach truth I would teach my brothers, sisters and neighbors, that the only place spiritual truth can be found is in ones own heart, not in any church or book of the world.

People who preach anything else are doing the work of a fool. In my experience with loving your fellows.

In this world there is no evil one really, no devil, no almighty God, just an absence of Love and respect for your fellow travelers on the journey.

Peace

Yes. I've started the journey - reading the Bible that it. It's the first time I've really read it, other then being in Catholic religious knowledge class at school (before "losing my religion" love that song!) where they cherry picked it. I can see real parallels between god and Saddam Hussein. Both killed people on a whim when the people made them angry.

I just finished Exodus last night, and I have to say that god is very blood thirsty. The temple in Jerusalem must have stunk. They were commanded to sacrifice something ("from flock or herd") every day and sprinkle blood all around the alter. Yuck!

Also, the Levite clan gets to be the priests, and they are commanded to keep a portion of the sacrificial animals for themselves. AND, god says that all the Israelites must pay atonement in cash to the temple. With all that daily income, it's no wonder they were not allowed to charge interest. That would have meant that someone other than the priests could make money!!

It all sounded like the whole text was written by the priests themselves, and then there's the completely petulant attitude of god himself!! Don't get me started!!

The strongest way to learn the real truth of the bible is to merely read it, again, and again, and again.

A Theology group on an atheist site! Awesome! Textual criticism is always fun and it has a delicious habit of souring relations with believers who happen to have been spoon-fed their religion. I look forward to contributing here.

Great group; i have a similar topic in my 'mythology' group on the bible. The more people who learn to take a skeptical outlook and learn how to objectively criticise religious scripture - the better!! As i always say to a believer when questioning their beliefs - ' my questioning your beliefs is NOT the same as attacking them!'

I see it as respecting them since i have taken the time to research it rather than accept it simply for acceptance's sake!! Why would anyone do that?? LOL!!

It is true that many people take the path of religion to lead them out of destructive life styles. It is also true that people can do the same thing without a reliance on faith (you just don't hear about it as much). You sound like a very nice you…

From the article Tommy cited. "However, religious commentators have criticized Hawking's theorizing, saying he can never hope to explain what is essentially unexplainable." Well doesn't that kind of invalidate their own "god" theory then? ;p
