Welcome science fiction & fantasy fans!
As a science fiction/fantasy writer myself, I enjoy taking voyages into the unknown. Looking at the universe as it isn't often helps us put the real world into perspective. It's also fun to take an occasional vacation from the often-harsh reality around us. Unlike the theists, the religionists, the god-groupies who feel compelled to live in fantasy realms, we visit them and then come back home--and then go voyaging again.

I never meant to imply that because something entertains, it's somehow less important. Of course entertainment can inspire. To Kill A Mockingbird inspires. But the god groupies believe their fantasy stories actually happened and are real. We're not that gullible. We can support the ideals our fictions espouse without thinking they actually happened.

Sorry Star Trek for me was insiprational, as well as a perfect entertainment vehicle which could and did inspire and educate.
Yes its fiction, no I dont wear a uniform( although I have no truk with those who do) and no I cant speak Klingonese. But as HG Wells predicted and inspired, as did Jules Verne, could any one really argur that Roddinberry doesnt belong in the same catagory?? Lap tops, cell phones, the ipod, touch screen technologies being worked on now. The people who in vented these items or assisted in there creation will tell you very quickly how Trek influienced them.
And I cannot leave out Kim Stanley Robinsons MARS TRILOGY. That is "almost" a blue print for how to go to Mars. As Sagen often did ..speculate, just be sure to acknowledge what is speculation!

I'm sure that nobody here thinks that the episode was representative of real SF cons. But most of the people watching the episode probably weren't SF fans.
It does make me wonder how many of these people dressed really nicely for church on Easter than said, "Look how loony those silly science fiction fans are!"

I don't think anyone here is arguing that the episode was a realistic representation of any SF-themed convention (heck, CSI isn't representative of a real CSI lab). We only saw a small part of the convention, anyway. Basically I just enjoyed the inside jokes, particularly Hodges' Star Trek-influenced daydreams. Those were a real hoot.

Ironically, the network that runs CSI also currently holds the rights for the original Star Trek series.
But once again, we see how network TV assumes how people behave at SF conventions. Yeah, I've seen the folks in costumes at conventions but they are a smaller percentage than TV ever shows (although I've never been to a Star Trek, Galaxy Quest or Astro Quest convention so maybe they're more prevalent there).

Because of trademark restrictions they couldn't mention the name of the real show they were parodying...but we cognoscenti know it was really Galaxy Quest!

I just got finished watching CSI. I love the show and never miss it (I've always thought of it as borderline science fiction), but tonight's was a real treat. Most of it takes place at science fiction convention full of rabid "Star Quest" fans. It was a fairly ordinary CSI mystery, but the inside references to Star Trek are spot on and I laughed out loud a number of times. Highly recommended. Don't wait for the rerun or the DVD; if the episode is available on CBS's Web site, go ahead and satisfy your need for instant gratification.
