Welcome science fiction & fantasy fans!

As a science fiction/fantasy writer myself, I enjoy taking voyages into the unknown. Looking at the universe as it isn't often helps us put the real world into perspective. It's also fun to take an occasional vacation from the often-harsh reality around us. Unlike the theists, the religionists, the god-groupies who feel compelled to live in fantasy realms, we visit them and then come back home--and then go voyaging again.

I hope you'll all feel free to congregate here and compare your experiences in other worlds and times.

For whatever reason, this is quite possibly my favorite disaster movie of all time. For all its stock formula, stock characters, and very generous artistic liberties with physics and science, it is just plain fun. Plus, anything with Hillary Swank is automatically a little bit better that it otherwise would have been.

Comment by Jim DePaulo on July 14, 2010 at 11:04pm: I think I've read all of Hogan's work - he was a great writer and constructed really believable science. His politics were pretty much to the right some of it came out in his work (Mirror Maze for one). He had some strange notions so it would surprise me if he was a denier - but I don't if it's true. In any event he was a skilled story teller - sad to hear of his death.

Some weird reports that he was a Holocaust denier, which would seem oddly out of tune for someone so otherwise intelligent and scientific. He was personally, though, a nice guy.
