Welcome science fiction & fantasy fans!

As a science fiction/fantasy writer myself, I enjoy taking voyages into the unknown. Looking at the universe as it isn't often helps us put the real world into perspective. It's also fun to take an occasional vacation from the often-harsh reality around us. Unlike the theists, the religionists, the god-groupies who feel compelled to live in fantasy realms, we visit them and then come back home--and then go voyaging again.

I hope you'll all feel free to congregate here and compare your experiences in other worlds and times.

The 3D version I saw was also IMAX. I don't know if they have a regular-theater 3D version as well. But the 3D process was spectacular.

And yes, the military-industrial complex does come off as something less than sympathetic.

DYING to see Avatar. I'm told it's coming to my small town, one-screen theatre in a couple of weeks, but if it's not going to be in 3D I might have to endure the expense of a trip to the big city.

But if I'm seeing the promos correctly, it's not like an IMAX/special theatre 3D thing, it's 3D in regular theatres, right?

Also, wonderful little piece on it by Kent Jones on The Rachel Maddow Show; mostly about how the far Right is slamming it for being all indigenous-people-environment friendly.

"Who will stand up for strip mining in art?!?" -Rachel Maddow, with a wee bit of tongue in cheek. ;-)

I went to see Avatar on Xmas day and I have to say it blew me away. The technology that Cameron brought to the project was the cutting edge - including a new 3D camera that produces a better quality picture. The film is a visual work of art that really sucks you into the experience.
The most interesting part of the plot is the native religion. While it has all the flavor of a primitive animistic religion it is, in fact, based in reality and it's mechanisms are demonstrable. (fictional but believable)
IMO, it far surpasses any previous SF epic films - don't miss it.

I'm reading the Wheel of Time series, and I'm to book seven, which is The Crown Of Swords, I've enjoyed every minute, I just hate that work and stuff get in my way. I think Mat and Perrin are about my fav char. They are such funny men..lol--never knowing what to do about women and all thinking the other is more aware. What char. do you all like? Which book do you like the best?
And is Sanderson a good choice to finish the series?

Posted this as a reply to another thread, but was actually a little proud of what I came up with in like 10 minutes while distracted with other things.

Responding to the assertion that speculative musings about scifi/fantasy means we are religious and literally believe in whatever scifi/fantasy phenomena we are speculating about...

Our SciFi, who art in Imagination,
Hallowed be thy fantasy.
Thy lasers come,
Thy space babes be done,
On Endor as it is in the Gamma Quadrant.
Give us this day our daily cyborgs.
And forgive us our genetic experiments
As we forgive those who experiment with genetics against us.
Lead us not into bad narrative
And deliver us from dull.
For thine is the fire, and the explosion, in the vacuum of space
Suspended in disbelief,
rAmen.

Well, I'll certainly agree with you about Rubinek. He's always fun to watch, in anything I've seen him in.

@Stephen: W13 is complete crap, but for some reason I can't stop watching it. I actually thought the show got worse when Claudia entered the mix. Saul Rubinek is the king. I'd say the show itself though is just south of "so bad it's good".

There's a very nice review of my book Polly! here. I might point out that the site's "Headmaster," Frank Vevle, lives in Norway, so his English might appear a bit broken--but it's infinitely better than my Norse, so I'm not criticizing.

BTW, if you like reading or writing reviews of SFF, you might consider joining his site and becoming a member of his community.

Deep, it will consume you, elevate you, disappoint and frustrate you. But after reading it, you will been somewhere amazing. :)

I just recently finished the first book in the Wheel of Time series. I think I have a ways to go before I get to book 12, lol. Good thing I work at a book store! :)
