It would be nice to see the Rational Response Squad's radio show restarted or something like it.  I miss the passion and enthusiasm of the old show.

I’m really ticked off now…..BIG TIME!

Last night I expected all the “rapture”  yahoo’s to be gone.  All I expected to find was a bunch

of clothes, empty house, apartments, mobile homes and the like.  Cars just left on the street with the keys in them.

I had planned to go out looting. I was gonna clean up with the cash they left behind, their valuables, jewels, precious metals, silverware, electronics and the such.

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I even had a SHOPPING LIST!

And I had a list of things my friends wanted…..  Of course, there were some prescription meds certain friends wanted me to get for them…. And some things that weren’t prescription as well….

It only goes to show you, you can’t trust these “rapture” clowns….

Sigh……..back to clipping coupons….

Hello. I used to be an admin at Rational Responders under another screen name. :)

Good to "see" you again, Brian.

Ok, so it took some time to get around to it, but I had an interesting experience I thought I'd write about.

I went to Hyde Park in Sydney with a book. Generally, there are plenty of prosthelytising Mormons or JW's around. To my surprise, not a single true believer around. Probably because it was fathers day.

While reading, I was approached by a middle aged Indian man, who said he was a Yogi from India. I asked him to take a seat and tell me his story.

He showed me pictures of him with his teacher in India. He started saying things about me (vague things, like that I have an 'open' face). He then wrote on a piece of paper, scrunched it into a ball and put in on my hand, and told me to hold it in my fist. As I held it, he asked me what my favourite colour was, and I said blue. He then asked me my favourite number. I don't really have one, but since I have to have an answer to go on, I said zero, since it's an interesting number. He looked surprised, but accepted it. He asked me to open my hand and unravel the paper, and sure enough, "blue" and "zero" were written on it.

He goes on to start reading my fortune. He tells me that I will have great luck if I prepare my rice on Sundays, and never cut my fingernails or hair on Tuesdays.

And finally, he tells me that most people donate some money, and that poor people donate $100, middle class people $200, and rich people $500.

I tell him that I don't particularly care about luck, nor about the trivialities of my own life that I already know, nor his parlour trick with the piece of paper. If he's the real deal and he can do as he says, then I want to know why anything exists at all, or what happens after death. He ignores these questions and goes on with more cold reading (the jig is up!). I tell him I've been reading the Bhagavad Gita in philosophy class, and if he can tell me how to interpret it. Still ignores me.

I'm not a jerk though. I did give him $10 for a very good parlour trick :)

All in all, a very different religious conversation to what I expected. I had a chat with a friend of mine, an Indian national, who tells me that 'fake gurus' are very common in India, and many of them sport a magic trick and a bit of cold reading. Who knows, maybe this is the next one on our shores!

Hi there. I'm quite new to the rational response squad, and to the Atheist Nexus.

I've been planning for a while to go 'reverse prosthelytising' for a while now, and figure this is as good a time as any to start.

The basic idea is that there are certain places in town where prosthelytisers typically look for unfortunate passers-by to start putting on the hard sell. All I do is go there with a book, and soon enough, someone will ask me if I've heard of Jesus Christ (why no, I haven't, do go on…).

It's generally better than wrestling with prosthelytisers that go door to door, because you don't really know when a door knocker will turn up.

So maybe next weekend I'll post some stories of what happened while this was going on :o)

I came across this and thought I would share it with everyone.
I have had family and friends who have had personal problems.
It is hard for them, their family and their friends.
Thought this might help those who don't want a "religious" answer.

Brian Gilmour, a lot of us were kicked in the ass by the economy and lack of disposable income, meaning we had to focus on work and making ends meet, instead of organizing activism. The RRS forums were always active, though. Come say hi!
