The IRS exemption and prohibition only extends to support of political candidates from the pulpit, not religions' growing influence on polticial issues.  The statute should be rewritten to make it clear a church or religion will lose tax exempt status if they support or denounce social issues.

@James:  Very well said!

As god is an invisible means of support (thanks Ambrose Bierce for a great description), it might be a bit more accurate to say that humans who use the concept of god to obtain power and harm others are the greatest threat.  I say this in part because we use fear of the other (e.g., people following another religion) to build the war economy and the surveillance state which are, paradoxically, destroying the very object of their efforts (protecting the US, Americans, our freedoms and our system of governance, and more).

@ Rational Robot These people seek to dismantle every progressive (secular) advancement Mankind has made, especially in the U.S., for a century or more.  They want pre-Roe v. Wade abortions in dark alleys using rusty coathangers.  They want pre-Tennessee v. Scopes religious "science" taught in biology classes.  They want LGBT people to stay out of sight and in their closets (or put through "reparative therapy" with Marcos Bachmann et al.). As Huckabee put it, they want the Constitution interpreted by Christian and biblical tenets, no matter you might be Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, or even, once the theocrats take over, Jews.  The video of the lunatic with shit for brains just reinforces my argument that the greatest enemy in our democracy is God.

Recovering from Religion

Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion. With local support groups throughout the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, and real-time resources accessible to everyone, RR is where to turn when faith has lost its luster.See More
