I am an Atheist who chooses to follow a Buddhist path in the heart of lala land, Bible Belt USA. And I don't really try to hide my own belief (or lack thereof) just as I tend to wear my politics on my sleeve. I am loathed or pitied by those around me. One imbicile decided that I was a witch and professed to pray for me! I told him, "I don't use my magic on you. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't use yours on me. I don't trust your skill with it!"

I am tired of being bitter toward these people. It only hurts me. But they go on and on about how they are saved (better than me) and I am not (sub-human and undeserving of basic human rights). I can't believe that they can't see how utterly ugly they are.

They can't have one big church because they don't agree with each other. In fact, many of them hate each other, but not as much as they hate atheists.

I tend to keep to myself, I grew up in a household that believes in jesus but not like how most do and didn't attend church. I married into a very religious family. My husbands family is hardcore Christians, we've done everything that you're not suppose to and got in trouble by his family. Him and I have to go through life as of now acting like we believe that way we don't have to hear his family complain. It isn't a fun thing to do, but it's a lot better than hearing someone whine in your ear about going to hell if we don't repent...

Personally I try to be kind and keep my beliefs to myself with most people, but sometimes I just feel the need to speak my mind. I am making progress on that. I suspect I'll be speaking up more and more as time goes on. I admire those of you who are speaking up for yourselves on that. Being in the bible belt it just seems to be to ones advantage to pretend to believe.

I agree orson, but my honest answer to senior citizens around here will most probably not be good for me. I have a lot of elderly customers waiting for heaven, and i don't want to screw that up for them. Well, I guess everyone can do what works for them. If a young jesus freak dude approaches me at a gas station, it's on (that has happened). When i walked away from him to get a snack in the store, he got shouted down by the next guy at the pump:) Great moment. I told bible thumpers at my door to not come back. But, like i said, i don't feel the need to get into it with some people and some situations; don't have the time or energy. The information is out there, and it's not my job to enlighten anyone. I'd rather spend my time doing something else. For me, i avoid the topic (religion) with people in public. People close to me know where i stand, and that's all i care about.

Damian, I think if someone asks if you're religious, then you owe them an honest answer. You don't have to make a scene. When my students ask if I'm saved, I tell them no, and leave it at that. They deserve to know the truth.

This discussion reminds me of "Annie Laurie Gaylor", radio host of the freedom from religion show. She always says "keep agitating".
