I wouldn't limit it to mere conspiracy theories. In fact I will start a discussion soon (or maybe more than one) that tackle these questions.

So, down to business then..  I'm curious, can any of us think of other thought patterns in the human experience that are similar to religious thought patterns?  Identifying the nature of the beast, and any similar natures is key.  I'm thinking conspiracy theories..  and maybe whenever someone's world view is completely shaken, such as finding out a partner was cheating or that they were adopted... something like that.
