Has it Been Easy for Anyone?

Started by Nathan Hevenstone. Last reply by Loren Miller May 16. 8 Replies

I wonder if anyone who's gone from faith to non-faith has done it relatively easily? I ask because, for me, it's not really been that tumultuous. I guess it has a lot to do with my upbringing. Despite my family being really religious, it has also…Continue

Anyone still deal with anything like this?

Started by Starland Victor Seay. Last reply by blue pashmina May 16. 24 Replies

One thing I have noticed is a tendency to "doubt" my new path in life. I still want to reach for the Bible sometimes. I still hesitate somewhat when someone mentions Pascal's "Wager"...LOL! Even though I know that science teaches this and that no…Continue

Walking Away

I'm guessing many here walked away from one religion or another. What religion did you walk away from? Did you look at other religions, if so what ones? What made you settle on Atheism?Continue

Maintaining family ties

I was adopted into a fundamentalist Seventh Day Adventist pastor's family. My parents loved me and I enjoyed a happy and secure childhood. Although I felt disappointed that I couldn't take dancing lessons, be involved with local theater or…Continue

Shelby, apologize for nothing. You, in your arguments, are aiding the deluded. Don't go soft for fears of hurting someone's feelings about a being that is nothing more than a phantasm. Don't be mean, just be irreverent. And do so with humor. That's the best medicine.

I find myself losing the desire to provoke arguments with theists on the subject of god and the bible. I am grateful for this for a couple of reasons: I have wasted too much of my life on prayer and argument, and I worry that if I am responsible for the debunking of a person's beliefs I am also responsible for the potential crisis that follows. Perhaps that guilt is a tie to religion I am yet to sever, but I don't wish to add to suffering. But, I sometimes can't bite my tongue.

Richard, and that's the very god that the Christian religion would have you worship given the Genesis story about not eating from the tree of knowledge.

Corey, about the fear of hell you mention. There's a line I always admired: there can't be a god who would damn you for refusing to abandon reason.

If there is the god isn't worthy of respect. From Meditations of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

I never held any deep religious beliefs, and I wasn't raised by atheist parents. I grew up in a dysfunctional family, so I didn't have the opportunity to get doctrinated. However, later in life when I decided I should be (i.e., I was supposed to be) religious, I made a real effort to believe. I played that game for a few years, and then I saw the light. The game was over; I realized that I had been deluding myself and that I had never, ever had anything that could be called a religious experience. I have only one friend who is an admitted atheist, but I am sure I know other people who are atheists, but they haven't admitted it to themselves yet.
