Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion. With local support groups throughout the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, and real-time resources accessible to everyone, RR is where to turn when faith has lost its luster.

Don't go soft for fears of hurting someone's feelings about a being that is nothing more than a phantasm. Don't be mean, just be irreverent. And do so with humor. That's the best medicine.

I am grateful for this for a couple of reasons: I have wasted too much of my life on prayer and argument, and I worry that if I am responsible for the debunking of a person's beliefs I am also responsible for the potential crisis that follows. Perhaps that guilt is a tie to religion I am yet to sever, but I don't wish to add to suffering. But, I sometimes can't bite my tongue.

I grew up in a dysfunctional family, so I didn't have the opportunity to get doctrinated. However, later in life when I decided I should be (i.e., I was supposed to be) religious, I made a real effort to believe. I played that game for a few years, and then I saw the light. The game was over; I realized that I had been deluding myself and that I had never, ever had anything that could be called a religious experience. I have only one friend who is an admitted atheist, but I am sure I know other people who are atheists, but they haven't admitted it to themselves yet.
