Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion. With local support groups throughout the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, and real-time resources accessible to everyone, RR is where to turn when faith has lost its luster.

I wonder if anyone who's gone from faith to non-faith has done it relatively easily? I ask because, for me, it's not really been that tumultuous. I guess it has a lot to do with my upbringing. Despite my family being really religious, it has also…Continue

One thing I have noticed is a tendency to "doubt" my new path in life. I still want to reach for the Bible sometimes. I still hesitate somewhat when someone mentions Pascal's "Wager"...LOL! Even though I know that science teaches this and that no…Continue

I'm guessing many here walked away from one religion or another. What religion did you walk away from? Did you look at other religions, if so what ones? What made you settle on Atheism?Continue

I was adopted into a fundamentalist Seventh Day Adventist pastor's family. My parents loved me and I enjoyed a happy and secure childhood. Although I felt disappointed that I couldn't take dancing lessons, be involved with local theater or…Continue

Comment by Viking on May 20, 2012 at 4:07pm My Friend,
Look it this way. I became an atheist when I was still in the first or second grade of elementary school. I was then an altar boy in Poland in catholic church. When I was wasting my playtime on the knees and holding my urine to the limit, because I could not go to the boys-room I begun to think about all this crap. I realized, that this crap is nothing better then a crap. I was still attending the church, but only under my mother supervision. Then, when in the school program we learn more about science there was no return for me.
My Friend, I don't know how old you are but, when you start questioning existence of god, this becomes a reason for it. Then is only your own choice to eat the stinky meat farther or take an other menu. Bad meat can kill you. I suggest you to take a vacation and go on a tour and see, how beautiful this planet is. Their is not, never was and never will be a intelligent power to be able to control entire universe or maybe (very possible) universes.
Get your vacation, go to Las Vegas and I will give you a little discount on my tours.
BTW, I have a discount for all atheists on my tours. Just enter this code ATH666 when making a reservations at:
Comment by Providence on May 20, 2012 at 3:26pm Hi everyone,
I haven't posted on here for sometime- It's good to be back!
Would it be ok to run something by you all.... I have been an Atheist for about a year or so. (maybe more- it's hard to be exact as there was a lot of coming out and running back to the church when I first started to question things!)
But sometimes I still feel intuitively that god is real, when i pick up the Bible it feels 'true' when I sit and read it. This sounds really strange i know because I know the arguments as to why the Bible cannot be the word of god and heck what do we mean by god anyway?! (I am also aware of the fact that to some extent my reaction to the bible, etc is a learned one!)
Yet I still worry, It's often when i feel uncertain about life or I become afraid of hell that I will run back to reading religious material and pray or whatever. I also get the really strong feeling that I want to go to church and that I (somehow) 'know' god is real but am denying it.
I know all of this is total crap and I dont think about this when I am feeling fine (i.e confident of myself and my views) but can't understand why these urges are so strong in me when I experience them (i.e when I am uncertain?) and quite why i get them when I know all of this it total crap?? Does anyone else hear where i'm coming from?
I'd really appreciate your responses!
Thank you in advance! :)
Comment by Selina Mannion on May 7, 2012 at 7:43am @alice you could double dip and use the same article for my book as the other book. If you type it, I can do all the editing. Thanx you can message me here or email me at sa-mannion@wiu.edu
Comment by Alice on May 7, 2012 at 12:10am I grew up in an Indian cult - I might get some time to contribute - I'm currently working on my own book - and have also promised to contribute to another book - stories about how we came to be atheists... So keep me in touch - and I might get some time to do something - also it's more easy if you can edit.... I can knock out 40,000 words in a weekend if I don't need to edit! :)
Comment by Selina Mannion on May 6, 2012 at 9:39pm @ dan I love that question. I have a problem with all religions, not just islam. Islam, judaism, and christianity are very similar. Almost all the claims against Islam apply to them. I am trying to reach a wide audience. I am trying to show people life is so much better without religion. also only 1% of the united states is muslim, so that would make my audience that much narrower.
Comment by Dan DeMura on May 6, 2012 at 6:55pm Selina... because your story is from Muslim background would you not be able to write the book written for other Muslims on the fence of non-belief? Do you really need to make it a book of stories from many faiths?
Comment by Selina Mannion on May 6, 2012 at 6:38pm I am a broke college student who does not have any money sorry. This will be my first book and it will probably cost me more to publish than I will make. I just want people to help me in the atheist cause. It should not take long to write and I can do the editing. I wrote my story, but my problem is not being able to find other people who are willing to write for my book.
Comment by James M. Martin on May 6, 2012 at 9:11am Darrel is correct. I freelanced for 11 years and sold one paperback biography of a singer-songwriter superstar (hack work) and a hardcover I-narrative study of an est spinoff, Actualizations, and I wrote dozens of newspaper and magazine articles and never had a year where I made more than four or five thousand dollars. Times have changed, of course, but during the 80s and early 90s I self-published some occult books by xerographic means, one of them hundreds of pages long, and I illustrated it cover to cover with illos from the Midnite Image Supply. The cost of the printing greatly outweighed the minor returns when you consider the labor that went into the book. Still, a book on rejection of religion might sell well if written right. It is a hot topic and might encourage others to break the spell.
Comment by Darrel Ray on May 5, 2012 at 11:00pm There are almost no books on the market today that make enough money to matter. It is a labor of love. Unless you are Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris, you are probably putting more money and certainly time, into a project than you will ever get out. Additionally, writing a 15 page essay/story is incredibly easy compared to the entire book enterprise. Finally, I have written a number of chapters and essays over the years for books, magazines and journals and generally the editor of the work made next to nothing for an effort that was far larger than mine. If you want to contribute a story that might help others, then do so but don't expect anything in return. That just isn't how the publishing industry works now or ever has worked, unless you are Steven King, etc. Even when I have been offered royalties for a chapter, I simply decline and tell the editor of the anthology to take it. Its not enough to worry about once it is split between a dozen people AND they did far more work than I and deserve as much as they can get from a project.
Comment by Jennifer Kaufman on May 5, 2012 at 10:52pm then I don't get it, and I'm not here to stir problems; but why would someone put so much effort (10-15 PAGES) to co-write another's book without some tangible payment? The original poster is not asking for a one sentence comment.
