Recovering from Religion

Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion. With local support groups throughout the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, and real-time resources accessible to everyone, RR is where to turn when faith has lost its luster.

One thing I have noticed is a tendency to "doubt" my new path in life. I still want to reach for the Bible sometimes. I still hesitate somewhat when someone mentions Pascal's "Wager"...LOL! Even though I know that science teaches this and that no…Continue

Last night I was reading Seth Andrew's book, Deconverted, and I almost fell out of my chair when he discussed being forced to watch the end times film from the 1970's call "A Thief in the Night."  He described some of the scenes, and I had a…Continue

This is, of course, assuming that she'll be willing to talk about it rationally. Unfortunately with her religion I will be branded as someone who has been possessed by the devil and it can very well steamroll down from there

@Mike: Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I'm an only child so I'm basically her life, but so is church. With me being, more or less, raised in this particular denomination, she's gonna hit the roof. Will she disown me? Probably not, will we be able to have a normal conversation without her trying to convert me back to something I really stopped believing in once I was 10 when I figured out that the pastor couldn't answer a simple question that I had? Probably not either, and it doesn't help that I'm living with her again because I needed to move back home because of various events.

@Linda - Unfortunately, my mother is the type that no matter how this goes, she's probably going to hit the roof and I may get trapped by the pastor of her church at some point in time and have them pray Satan out of my heart or something like that.

@ Madison - Maybe just tell her you are an agnostic and are reconsidering things. She might be able to handle that, whereas, if you tell her you are now an atheist, she might have a stroke.

The American Atheists web site has an article that might be some help to you:

http://www.atheists.org/atheism/coming_out

I think they have some great advice, and even give some tips on how best to answer the inhabitable questions you will get from your mom, and other family or friends that you talk to about it.

Hope that helps!

anyone have an advice on how to maybe broach the subject of one's nonthiestic-ness (if there is such a word) to their highly conservative/religious mother who will not be able to ever come close to understanding how/why i no longer believe?

Just wanted to invite everyone to listen to a recently released discussion with Darrel Ray. It's a in depth talk with Darrel about his recently released sex survey. You can find it here: http://agnosticsalvation.podomatic.com/ .

It's a pretty fun and informative interview and we have it on fairly good authority that the Flying Spaghetti Monster will be most displeased if you pass up on this opportunity. Is not listening to it really worth an eternity of stale beer and herpes? Personally, I wouldn’t take the chance.
