Hey, Christmas was a pagan hliday, no shame in observing a catholic holiday.
I for one have given up certain food for lent because I think periods of fasting still have some use. For one, teaching you to apreciate what you have, and to test yourself.

I used to be in awe when the priest visited the school I went to. Now, when I see a priest, I feel nothing. I used to think they were connected to "god", but now I disbelieve everything they have ever said to me.

I guess I'm a recovering Catholic. I haven't consider myself one since more than 20 years.
I went to Catholic School until college. I think going to a catholic school helped me question my beliefs early on. I would ask teachers and priest questions that they couldn't answer. I don't have bad feelings about my time there. On the "graduation required" retreat everyone new I was an atheist and beside praying for me, no one cared.

When I was in fifth grade, I had a Catholic school teacher who would grab me by the hair and shake my head, ripping out my hair by the roots. I count myself lucky: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jHqndf9Kx4

Former Catholic here, and a product of their schools, too. :/
I'm still pissed about it. I could have done without the guilt trips and encouraged docility, thankyouverymuch.

Hi!! Former Catholic here as well. The people that run that religion are... well, I hate to talk bad of people... but there is nothing nice to say about them. I too feel guilt still for things that are out of my control- but I am getting better.

One thing I will say- I love the old churches. I was raised at St. Mary's in Minoa NY and it was the most beautiful building I had ever seen. Dark wood, stained glass, the scent of candles burning. Dark. Soothing. I love churches that have maintained the somber dark look. St. Marys is now bright and loud. I tried to go to mass in Jan of 08 while in NY burying my father. I tried to capture the beauty and mystery the building had when I was a child. Now the walls are white, all lights are on bright and there is a band playing up front. Oh well...now not only is the service bunk- but so is the building. While trveling overseas in the Navy, I visited many churches just for the beauty- and I will say there are some beautiful old building over there..
