Well science (and philosophy) have challenged the original basis of the practice called psychoanalysis which people think of as the briader medical practice psychiatry, and not to be confused with Psychology. In part large parts of psychoanalysis evolved away from its analytic roots (to survive and be effective ) without telling patients....I take discussion psychoanalysis to be relevant here since Freud's picture is on this site called "psychology" even though he was far from one and a bit a cult creator by cultivating the father figure. There is a general disillusionment with the field of psychoanalysis whose practice abounds in non-scientific concepts growing out of psychical energy metaphors with out empirical basis.

Howdy! Does anyone here dig REBT, and CBT, and Behavior therapy? Of course, I do love all areas of psychology, but these three are my favs.

My instructor just had a baby. She has already conditioned her son to feed whenever she sings "Ding dong the witch is dead" and to sleep when she sings another song. For some reason, he likes heavy rock/metal music, though. XD

Ian, although I don't know too much about the "Mozart effect" specifically, I've heard from several different people that although music definitely has beneficial (and even therapeutic) effects, playing classical music for a developing baby in utero is not going to do much more than train that baby to prefer that music. The reason this study has gotten so much attention, from what I understand, is because it was among the first showing that music could be more than petty entertainment. Now a lot more is known about that kind of thing (for example, I hope to ultimately research the uses of music therapy for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases), and while there are tons of incredibly exciting results to read about, the "Mozart effect" isn't necessarily one of them. But again, it's not my expertise, and that's just what I've read and heard from the people I've read and heard.

Hey everyone! I'm a 3rd-year cognitive neuroscience major planning on getting a Ph.D. in music cognition... not exactly psychology I know but everything about the brain/mind is fascinating!

That sounds fascinating, I dunno if I'd be able to mentally handle it though. Course, I plan on being in couples/marriage/sex counseling and sex education, so I'm sure I'll have my own headaches to look forward to lol.
