Facebook announced the release of its new app, Places, today. Using GPS technology it can now figure out exactly where you are and let everybody know it. The irony is that this came out just as Eric Schmidt of Google was warning that sometime in the not too distant future, people will have to change their names and identities to avoid their Facebook pasts.

To quote the Facebook blog: “If you’re like me, when you find a place you really like, you want to tell your friends you’re there. Maybe it’s a new restaurant, a beautiful hiking trail or an amazing live show. … with Facebook Places. You can share where you are and the friends you’re with in real time from your mobile device.”

Thanks for posting this. Features like this should be opt-in, not opt-out. What's sad and worrying is that this sort of thing is happening so much now, people are starting to shrug it off.
