Is it in fact the case that RC priests have some sort of diplomatic immunity?

Yes, these predators using their position to usurp sexual favors should be dealt with harshly, prison sentences are the least they should receive. Had my own run in with a church minister who taught us bible studies offering to teach me how to masturbate.  I was 14 and ignored his offers.

Yes, prison is where they belong at the very least.

amer chohan and Joan, it happened in eighth grade.

In the Cincinnati (Ohio) Catholic school my dad sent his kids to, eighth graders were tested for ability to do high school work. Most boys went to the sports-oriented high school; another boy and I went to the academic high school taught by Jesuits. Most girls (including my older sister) went to high school classes in the nearby convent.

The nun who taught eighth grade had put a lot of effort into getting as many kids as she could to enter the seminary or the convent. One boy went to the nearby seminary to study for the priesthood and one girl entered the nearby convent to study for...the sisterhood?

I don't know who finished what; my dad moved us all to Florida two years later.

Joan,

Yes, it's been done & televised I believe, but I don't have first-hand knowledge on any names. Our local newspaper is the Williams Lake Tribune which could possibly have some archives or something.

Loren: About six years ago, an annual County art show here in Napa County showed a life-size sculpture of a wolf in a priests' clothing. I heard a few people, as they viewed it, say they liked it. It stirred no controversy, as it surely would have a few years earlier.

Patricia, do you know of anyone in your area who gathered stories from those who suffered abuse, neglect besides being taken from their families and denied their religion and language (abuse enough to be criminal)?

They could be collections of written or verbal stories?

Joan,

This whole area of BC is pretty much native & some of the horrid stories for the catholic residential schools are right here within my town area.

Pat, your explanation of RICO Act needs to be emphasized.

Pat

Just to follow up on what Loren said, there is a Federal statute commonly referred to as the RICO Act. "Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations" Act. It was designed to go after the heads of Mafia families, for the crimes committed by their underlings with full knowledge of the Capo di tutti capi ("Godfather" - or in the case of the RCC - governing prelates). In addition, there are both State and Federal conspiracy laws that meet out prison sentences for those that consciously cover up crimes or, as listed in Illinois, Obstructing Justice (a felony). There are also numerous statutes regarding accessories to crimes - before, during, and after the criminal act. All of these, by the way, carry prison terms.

Loren's statement needs to be repeated:
"The applicability of the RICO statute to the specific activities of the RCC which Pat and I have discussed here is clear and unambiguous ... and once again, I have to ask: where is there someone with the cojones to APPLY them?"

Pat's statement needs to emphasized:
"Now, given that there are already laws on the books to deal with the conspiratorial criminal cover-ups done by monsignors, bishops, archbishops and cardinals, seems to me its up to the civil authorities here in the US - State and Federal prosecutors - to get off their derrières and actually do something about this!
