Because a treaty signed by the U.S. with the Vatican granting diplomatic status, and thus not just immunity and legal obstruction of justice the government will not respond to crimes committed against children. Is there something private citizens an do to hold individual pedophiles accountable? The church hierarchy allegedly covered up their tacks and sent them to other congregations without proper notification of charges against them.
Thank you Tom Sarbeck for the lead to www.snapnetwork.org. I gladly add my voice to theirs. I don't want anyone innocent of these charges to be falsely prosecuted, nor do I want those who abused children to go without penalty.
Survivors are doing things; read of their actions at www.snapnetwork.org
Survivor or not, consider signing up with them and adding your voice.
Thanks, Joan, for this discussion.
Survivors need allies; visit SNAP, the survivors' network of those abused by priests.
Google SNAP and search the short list, or go to www.snapnetwork.org
Well my comment was slightly rhetorical given that anything I could think of would probably be considered "cruel and unusual" anyway.
OTOH I am told anyone in prison who becomes known to the other inmates as a child molester is in for a very rough time, given how many of the other inmates harbor resentments against the people who molested THEM as children...
Then what do you suggest?
Prison!?!? Are you out of your minds?!?!
Not nearly harsh enough.
Time to change things then isn't it?
Unfortunately, the long arm of the law has been co-opted by a treaty the U.S. signed with the Vatican granting the other diplomatic status and thus not just immunity but legal obstruction of justice. Thus, we will never get to the emeritus pop for his sundry crimes in doing the previous pop's dirty work. It is possible that his move into adjacent digs and his new title are devices to protect him in the event, e.g. the World Court, should get involved (not so far fetched: child molestation by priests is a violation of civil rights). As it is, though, there has been a significant step-up in prosecutions of clerics. It's about time! Now, if those parishioners would just wake up and realize they have been donating their shekels to criminal activities....
It's long past time that one's religion conferred immunity to laws &/or prosecution!!!!!!
