Politics, Economics, and Religion

Religion has so many connections to political and economic beliefs, there needs to be a place to identify linkages, problems, goals, options, action plans and evaluation criteria.

What is the purpose of life?

An eternal question, what is the purpose of life?, occupied philosophers’ thoughts throughout history. Stone pictographs reveal even primitive peoples reflected on this query. Each one has the capacity to define his or her personal thinking about politics, economics and religion.

'Debt ceiling' and defaulting on US obligations: How catastrophic would it be in your opinion?"
Michael Hudson --
"It would be like stepping on a piece of gum and having to get it off your shoe. Adam Smith said in the Wealth of Nations that no government has ever paid its debt. Nothing has changed. It would be a zero problem. People who talk like that are trying to frighten you. When a politician tries to frighten you can think of what is it that he wants me to do? How am I being manipulated... This is pure ignorance."

jingoism exists when extreme patriotism, aggressive foreign policy, threats or force against other countries occur in order to safeguard what is perceived as its national interests. When excessive bias in judging one’s own country as superior to others exists, as it has in the USA. It is extreme nationalism.

Pope will have security, immunity by remaining in the Vatican

"if the pope did move permanently to another country, living in seclusion in a monastery in his native Germany, for example, the location might become a place of pilgrimage."

Joan: "Profit does not provide an incentive to keep people out nor does it provide incentives for humane treatment."

True, but I have so often seen public employees who seem indifferent to their responsibilities. For instance, for about twenty years, the California Dept. of Corrections was in the courts for medical care so awful that inmates died.

There are stunning exceptions, illustrated by NASA's early successes. There are also unstunning exceptions, responsible public employees doing good work.

What I've heard of the private prisons in Arizona persuade me that the state's politicians reward their supporters with inmates. The taxpayers, of course, pay.

Private prisons provide the wrong incentives for being and doing their job. Profit does not provide an incentive to keep people out nor does it provide incentives for humane treatment. Racism plays a role in placing people of color into those conditions.

According to the "Arizona Republic, the reality is that private prisons in the Grand Canyon State so far cost more on a per-prisoner basis than do public institutions. Some experts contend that firms in the prison business reap profits by billing government for rather more than their initial lowball estimates while scrimping in ways that may make prisons less secure."
