Politics, Economics, and Religion

Religion has so many connections to political and economic beliefs, there needs to be a place to identify linkages, problems, goals, options, action plans and evaluation criteria.

What is the purpose of life?

An eternal question, what is the purpose of life?, occupied philosophers’ thoughts throughout history. Stone pictographs reveal even primitive peoples reflected on this query. Each one has the capacity to define his or her personal thinking about politics, economics and religion.

Joan, to read your clarification then read the line "A little dust off, a splash in a pan of water and then to their mouths; their eyes sparkle with delight. "  That is so funny!

Daniel, my paragraph didn't read very clearly, did it! I had the same reaction when I re-read it as you.

Tax Avoidance, Government Dependency, And Romney’s Boca Raton Host

I don't have any idea how to have the power to overcome these business practices, except boycott. If I voluntarily go on an austerity plan, know exactly how and who benefits by my spending dollars and then boycott them, I would at least fee

l better about myself. The benefit is a simpler life style. Get off the consumption merry-go-round and stop feeding the beasts. Want to join in the endeavor? Where to start? Cut up credit cards, know product sources, buy locally from producers of goods and services? Anything else you can think of and share?

Is there a web site that lists who owns what?  Like the Koch brothers have their dirty little fingers in a lot of different industries and products.  I buy supermarket generic products as much as possible, but I have NO idea who actually makes things like generic brand TP...or who owns Safeway, for that matter.

I sold my car, so I'm not buying oil and gasoline, but I use natural gas to cook (as little as possible - I "nuke" what I can)...and electricity.  Don't know where that comes from.

Back in the 1960s & '70s, one of my favorite writers was trying to "go green" before that became hip.  He was so proud of all his wood-burning heaters and stoves.  THEN he learned that individual householders burning wood (or coal) pollutes the air more than whatever it is giant utilities do to generate electricity.

We try, but we can't win.  And as you said, most product boycotts don't make a dent in some fat cat's profits.

Koch Brother's Wealth 1999-2011

I wonder how many of their workers lost their jobs?

I wonder if anybody would sincerely mourn if the KKKoch brothers died.

The Blacklisting of Progressive Economics

David Sirota, FEBRUARY 3, 2009

"willful ignorance, ... in what has been one long narrative arc whereby economic progressives have been deliberately shut out of top administration jobs. Just step back and think about it for a minute: Eminently qualified and well-respected progressives advisors to Obama during campaign: James Galbraith, Joseph Stiglitz, Dean Baker, Robert Reich, Paul Krugman and Larry Mishel."

Obama chose "Rubin sycophants like Larry Summers and Tim Geithner to run the economy - the same Larry Summers who pushed the repeal of the Glass-Steagal Act, the same Geithner who masterminded the kleptocratic bank bailout, the same duo whose claim to fame is their personal connections to Rubin, a disgraced Citigroup executive at the center of the current meltdown. And the list of Rubin sycophants keeps getting longer, from Peter Orszag to Jason Furman."

Atheist Mutant, your video shows a fascinating building process that may very well be an effective and efficient way to build housing for low income people and for earthquake zones. I am impressed with the domed structures. I really like the concept. Do you know where these houses/buildings are in present use? I'll have to make a search.  Thanks for the very good lead.

Atheist Mutant, I notice you are from Akiak, Alaska. I have not been in that part of the state, but from Google Earth, it looks like it is flat with a meandering river, many ox-bow lakes and many lakes. I assume it is part of the low land of gravelly soil on the watershed of the Yukon River to Bristol Bay. You must have an interesting story to tell.

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 8 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
