Constantine, the first christian emperor, disapproved of branding on the face because of a christian belief that the face had a special religious significance; branding anywhere else on the body he authorized. He banned crucifixion because of its association with Christ, but slaves could still be forced to drink boiling oil or molten lead, and slave owners were free to murder their slaves.
