Howard I know how you feel, My Uncle was Professor of Physics at NYU and a student of his was going to drop out of college because she was flunking his 101 class, but she loved the subject, he motivated her, found her a tutor and she passed, got BS, MA and Phd. At his funeral she said imagine if Dr. Otis had not taken the time to talk to me, I would have never won the Noble prize in Physics.

Even Micheal Moyer, publisher, authur and Senior editor of Scientific American understands my video. He writes in Feb, 2012 SiAm page 36 "At at level we humans are comfortable with-space appears to be smooth, continuous thing. We never see a car move down the street instantaneously leaping from one place to next as if lit by God's strobe light.

Where do we Atheists get organized so that we can voice our opinions when voting. We need to send a message to the religious right that we will no longer stand for their delusions. We need Atheists in Congress and as President in order for this country to be a leader in science and education. So, as Atheists, and hopefully, scientists, how do we get organized?

I'm an artist, not a physicist. But I spent many an hour talking about the 'big questions' with a very respected one. My 'step-father-in-law' (whatever that means) who was Chairman of the Physics department at Rutgers University for a record sixteen years. He totally beefed up their string theory research staff.

He was a true atheist. He was both curious and a skeptic. He really helped me see the aesthetics of math, physics, and cosmology. He gave me a great book for my birthday: "Five Equations that Changed the World" Awesome book. Awesome man. I truly miss him.

At his funeral a year ago, I was one of the only people there who was (tactfully) appalled at the Episcopalian service his daughters gave him. I decided - if I don't procrastinate till it's too late - that I want to do one of those slightly creepy 'Hi, I'm dead now' videos to make sure that everyone is clear that I've left the building and no one is ever going to see me again.

I came across an interesting site called the symphony of science. Here is a link: http://bit(dot)ly/sci-symphony. Replace the '(dot)' with '.' when you retype the url. I don't understand why their is an icon for 'hyperlink' above this box when it does not work. Any attempt to embed html doesn't work. At least, not for me. Any suggestions?

Hey all, just thought I'd drop in and introduce myself. I see there's very little activity here so I'll try to brighten things up a bit ^^

I'm a student at the University of Victoria (Canadian), currently in my 3rd year and studying physics, astronomy and math. I'll be taking a break for a few semesters though as my husband and I decided we wanted a baby. I'm not technically a physicist yet, but it should happen in the future assuming nothing goes wrong. Hope you don't mind me dropping in :)

I just found this website yesterday (AN) and am loving it so far. It's very difficult to find anybody to talk to about atheism (in general) where I am, including at the University, surprisingly.

Firstly, congratulations! I wish you and your bride all the best with life's greatest adventure :)
Perhaps we should remove our discussion to the forum, but being lazy, I'll take another crack at it here first.
I can't agree with you at all. Remember the discussion on the stability of Physics? In fact we have no clue as to how constant the fundamental physical constants actually are do we? Any one of them could be changing slowly over time, or be different in other universes in the multiverse, or even be different in very different conditions someplace else in our own universe right now. The physical constants are in an entirely different class to the absolute mathematical constants (Pi, base of the natural logarithms, ...). But you are right that mathematics exists at the conceptual level, while all the sciences require a material world to exist, that is what makes math so essentially different from the sciences.
