Welcome to Parenting Little Heathens

Hi moms and dads. Welcome to the parenting without religion group here at A|N. Please feel free to post an introduction, tell us about yourself or if you'd rather not, just jump right into any discussion.

Before you get started I would like you to be familiar with our Posting Rules and Guidelines. This will help clarify what this group is and what topics are appropriate or inappropriate.

Also, you might be interested in our list of atheist related parenting resources list. This is a work in progress, if you've found something you think is a good fit please post a reply and I'll see about adding it.

If at any time you would like to contact me, the easiest way is to send a private message through my page. However, in order to send any member a PM you must first be their friend.

Thank you for joining the group, I hope you enjoy being here.

What to Think About:  Philosophy for a Thoughtful Younger Generation, by Chris Brockman is up on Amazon. Brockman uses his own definition of “philosophy” as a “systematic study of who I am, what’s out there, and what should I do about it,“to arrive at suggestions for things to think about.  Each chapter ends with scenarios and questions challenging the reader to think. This book is “written from a humanist perspective,” and may offend some religious sensibilities.  It is recommended for young adults.  Chris Brockman is the author of the classic of religious skepticism for children What about gods?

What if the "abstinence only" philosophy of sex education applied to other subjects? (click image to enlarge)

Social class inequalities reproduce themselves (among many other ways!) in how children are taught to handle classroom challenges.

"Not bothering" teachers perpetuates Dominator Culture and class inequality (posted in "Partnership Vision")

Hardball, but true, considering how many children die from others not being vaccinated. On a more gross note...

"When you refuse to vaccinate your children, you turn them into vectors for scores of lethal diseases, and you turn yourself into a willing bio-terrorist." (The Reprimand Project's Facebook photos)

Not grinning over this:

Hawaii will require parents to opt-in to sex education for their middle schoolers. This resulted from a campaign by a Republican state representative to eliminate the program; he objected that it was "normalizing" homosexuality.
