Hi Yvette! How about an article on religion in the workplace? I have no idea if other people are dealing with what I am, but meetings are sometimes opened with prayer, the team building book is based on Christianity and so on and so forth. Blech

I live in the Bible Belt, and I was raised Catholic. I remember sitting in church asking myself..."do people really believe this crap?" Fiery hell pits, the devil, pillars of salt...bleh bleh...I couldn't believe that my parents, my grand parents, actually bought into this mess. Then there was Catechism. I was a nightmare student. I asked all the questions no one could answer, and then I was told to leave after I refused to accept that I should just have faith.
My child is not going to suffer that injustice. If he has questions, he will be able to ask them. I'm NEVER going to accept my child throwing away his logic! I'm never going to accept anyone telling my child he will go to hell if he questions certain things. My response to him, is that the Church tried to stop Copernicus from asking how the solar system works, they even jailed him when he figured out the Sun was the center of the solar system. They said it went against the bible. I then asked my child who was right?
These are the things I want him to think about when being bullied by fundies!
I think he has a good head on his shoulders. I had the pleasure of taking him to the National Young Scholars Program in Washington DC last year, and he met other children who also were from families of intellectuals and non believers. He was so excited to meet people like him, it was nice for him to affirm there were others like us. I am glad I found this forum. It's nice to see other rational people using logic to raise their children to be intellectuals, thinkers, and problem solvers. Rock on!

I went to charismatic churches, which are supposed to be more "lively". But week after week of seeing the same women run around in circles, fall down "in the spirit" and scream.. it just gets old. Plus, Mass is only an hour, whereas our services were often 3-4 hours long. The most mainline churches I went to still had at least a 2 hour service.

12 years of Catholic School here. Church really helped my imagination a lot. I distinctly remember an elaborate tale I wove about robbers sealing off the church and attempting to rob it during services, and I was a superhero that used Kung Fu to defeat them, including swinging from chandolier to chandolier. It made that hour fly by.

I guess that boy doesn't go to one of the 'fun' churches. I remember feeling exactly the same way during Catholic mass. "God Almighty, why does this have to be so boring".

Some background: I have three girls, aged 12, 7, and 5. We are raising them as critical thinkers and are not pushing them away from religious so much as to be rational. As a result, we have no problem if they ask about religions and a desire to visit a church or synagogue.

They go to a Montessori school, which is not religious-based but obviously has plenty of religious families. One day my seven year old was telling me about a boy in her class that goes to church, and she asked me if she could go to church with one of the boys in her class. My wife and I were like, "Sure, no problem."

So she comes home from school the next day, and she says, "I asked Ethan about going to church with him, and he said I would hate it because church is so boring." She hasn't brought it up again. :)

I just joined this site and group. Very excited to meet other athiests, since I live in a terribly Christian area. I have a 3 year old daughter and a 1 year old son. It's great to know there are other parents out there like me!

Raising three heathen daughters. I have plenty of humorous "atheist kids in Texas" stories to draw on. :)
