Brenda - there is a possibility they might not try to pray. If they do, simple and kindly tell them, that is not a tradition in their house but they are welcome to pray silently for a moment before things start and then give them their moment and commence with the meal.  Whenever we had people over, my father would say grace "God bread, good meat, good god, let's eat." We weren't religious so we always thought it was pretty funny. I don't remember any of our religious friends objecting.

Perhaps you could be proactive and tell them about your own pre-meal "tradition"?  I'm not sure what that could be, but perhaps you could come up with something.  I had friends that used to start each meal with everyone telling about their favorite part of the day. It was nice to hear what everyone had done during the day and was a catalyst for dinner conversation.  If they beat you to the punch and mention a prayer, you could say, "Oh, we were excited to share with you our own pre-dinner ritual" or something similar.  Since they are not coming until next week, you could practice with the kids before then. Whatever you do, please let us know how it turns out!  And good luck!

We have some friends coming for dinner next week. Born-agains. They usually don't preach to us (they know I'm atheist), but when we went their their home for dinner last summer, they had us stand holding hands whhile the host said a blessing for the meal. We were polite and respectful, but I was a bit annoyed, feeling forced to participate in the prayer. Now I fear they will try this IN MY HOME, which I cannot tolerate, especially with my kids there. Is there any polite way to prevent this?
