Hi moms and dads. Welcome to the parenting without religion group here at A|N. Please feel free to post an introduction, tell us about yourself or if you'd rather not, just jump right into any discussion.

Before you get started I would like you to be familiar with our Posting Rules and Guidelines. This will help clarify what this group is and what topics are appropriate or inappropriate.

Also, you might be interested in our list of atheist related parenting resources list. This is a work in progress, if you've found something you think is a good fit please post a reply and I'll see about adding it.

If at any time you would like to contact me, the easiest way is to send a private message through my page. However, in order to send any member a PM you must first be their friend.

Thank you for joining the group, I hope you enjoy being here.

For moms only is my DW's Yahoo! group, AtheistMoms. It's been around since 2000 and is fairly active. I don't read it, too much mom stuff for me to deal with.

Hi moms and dads! I just thought i'd pop in and introduce myself. I'm Heather (duh), 28, a mom to a 9 yr old, 7 yr old, and 10 month old. Born and raised in the heart of the bible belt, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, moved to South Carolina (still bible belt, but a little more comfortable) in 2005. Anybody near me? Always nice to find other atheist couples and/or parents to hang with, since in this area they are kinda hard to come by! =)

Hello, I'm glad to have found this group! I'm really interested in how experienced atheist parents teach their children. Live in Sweden I come from Gibraltar (culturally catholic) but my fiancée and daughter are Swedes and born in Sweden. We are an atheist family and proud of it. Luckily Sweden is a very secular country. But my daughter who's 8 sometime asks me about God and Jesus and stuff, I usually answer somewhere along the lines that people believe in fairy tales and think that the fairy tales are for real. Don't know how else to answer really or haven't given it much thought. Any tips or ideas?

Hi all! I'm 28 years old and mom to a beautiful two-year-old named Mackenzie. I live in St. Louis, Missouri and am new to the Nexus and to this group.

I am planning on telling my daughter something similar to what you're saying. That some people believe in stories that mommy and daddy don't believe in. If she asks me why they believe those things I'll be at a loss though because my initial inclination would be to say negative things, but I want to teach her tolerance. Luckily she's only 2 so I have time to figure it out!

I'm 47 and have two daughters under 3, one in Montessori. I'm particularly interested in avoiding the spreading of superstition such as organized religion to children who are too young to comprehend it fully. But I realize that exposure is inevitable. So I'll be reading a lot of these discussion threads (and I already have close nonreligious friends giving me advice as well).

I definitely think that comparative mythology is a great tool for developing skeptical thinking tools in young children. I remember being fascinated as a child by creation and afterlife myths from different cultures, and it didn't take me long to figure out that if those stories were myths then perhaps the bible stories that my parents presented to me as fact were indeed nothing more than fairy tales. As much as I hate the idea of reading those stories to my kids, it may be the best way to arm them against the attempts of some of our Christian friends and family to "save them" from our godless state.

We do our best to put the focus on science. It's easy and fun! Kids have a natural curiosity about science so it's a natural "substitute". For church in our family. Living in Vancouver we have lots of resources available to us; science world, the Vancouver aquarium, Seattle science museum is close by as well.

I have a great book called 100 science experiments to do with kids that I got through usborne books, of all places and I refer to it quite a bit as well. It's spring, so try sprouting beans or seeds, bug collecting, rain meters, etc.

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
