I live in the Philippines and here they don't do Easter as you do in America. They have drunk guys whipping themselves to blood and nailing themselves to planks and other funstuff.

For the easter egg hunt. I don't think it's a tradition here, but the malls have them. Never saw anything about the egg laying rabbit.

We also don't have springtime.

Well if I lived in America, then my approach to this would be. Engage with the kids in arts and craft activities to make colourfull eggs and then play hide and seek with them.

I would then say this is an old tradition to celebrate the spring. It's the time of year when plants will sprout, bloom, germinate, produce pollen. The animals wil mate, produce sperm and eggs. The farmers that produces our food will also sow the seeds and toil the soil to increase its fertility.

That's why we have the tradition is to play with eggs to celebrate the fertility of life at springtime. Then hopefully the kid will ask what is seeds, fruits, to mate, sperm, eggs, fertility etc.

While we do our egg artwork or proceed to do spring gardening or a walk in the forest, we can talk about these topics.

I think so much of religion has been washed out of the way many celebrate Easter in America, that there's real no need to worry about those uncomfortable topics.  Decorating eggs, bunnies, even the word Easter: they're all pagan.  The Christians and their palms will be far away from your back yard.

We like to dig up information about the Spring equinox practices of our ancestors and lament the fact that Christians raped, murdered and kidnapped their culture and stole their lands.

Then we go egg hunting with the kids.

My kids are 8 and 5 and they enjoy looking for candy-filled plastic eggs in the back yard.  I don't think they have any idea of the religious aspects of the holiday at this point.  We also don't have any story about an easter bunny.  They wait inside while I go out to hide the treats.  In our family it's more of a, "Look!  Candy!" kind of holiday.  They have a blast and after they've found all the eggs they usually want to hide them for one another and keep the fun going.  I remember enjoying the same thing when I was a kid - it's like an excuse to eat chocolate and play hide and seek.

Thanks for the responses!  I will leave the large magic bunny and zombie jew out of it.  Egg hunts and a basket from me I think will work.  I never believed in the easter bunny it just seemed silly even as a little kid.  Science is always a good idea and that might be a great new tradition!

We try a different egg coloring technique each year, and turn it into a little bit of science discover.  One year, we used fruits and vegetables, and that was really fun.  My favorite was wrapping the eggs in yellow onion skins that had been soaked in hot water.  It made a very mottled looking design on the eggs.  This year we will boil eggs, then crack the shells (but keep them on) and then dye.  When you peel the shells off it should leave a veiny look on the eggs.  I'm with Jennifer H, we've never done a group hunt, but there is something fun about the adults sipping coffee in their pajamas in the backyard while our daughter looks in the bushes and trees for treats.  She's a bit too old for egg hunts now, but I'll still make her an easter basket with some books and candy in it.
