Guys, I just opened my email inbox and it has exploded with mail detailing this entire conversation! In fact the emails are still pouring in. The next time you want to start a discussion on something controversial, can you please do so in a separate topic so every member of this group doesn't have to get a blow-by-blow description of your debate? Thanks.

Egan, I'm sorry, but at this point you have me literally laughing out loud at how irrational you are being. I see there's no point in trying to help you understand, but we have tried! I apologize for trying to be polite to you! You've made it clear to all of us that you just don't know what you're talking about. I don't doubt that there will be no surprise pregnancies in your future. :)

Egan, is your shift key broken or do you just have a thing against capital letters which is similar to your distain for parents who have children?
Comment by GBM Harper on April 28, 2011 at 4:56pm
"no amount of politeness is sufficient"? Really??? Did you try ANY amount of politeness before making that claim?

Pirate--LOVE the comparison of children to un-medicated manic depressives with mood swings from minute to minute!!  LOL, so, so true!

I now know that even (possibly especially) a gifted child when overcome with an emotional response to a given situation they do not have the life-experience, cognitive or social skills to deal with, can and will throw a tantrum which no amount of reasoning will stop until it has simply run its course.

I now know that if a parent were to only shop when a child is in a predictable, happy, calm mood... said parent would never leave the house.

I now know that children have emotional responses equivalent to those of an un-medicated manic depressive, only the spaces between manic and depressive can be mere minutes. I further know now that this is not due to bad parenting, but rather to normal (albeit unpredictable) hormonal spikes and drops in a developing human organism.

Oh... I also now know a bit more about Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development.

Egan, your initial approach did not come off as a victim asking a question but as an attack against all of us who have chosen to have children. It seemed more as though you were telling all of us that we should have either never decided to have children or that we should have aborted all surprise pregnancies.

To answer you, I for one was young when I had my first two children, too young to have thought it through, unfortunately. I have always believed it to be incredibly important to raise my children respectfully. I, too, take issue when I see parents being mean to their children. I would venture to guess that many of us here also believe that respect should be a major part of being a parent. As far as choosing to have children goes, I can honestly say that I understand your confusion, since over population is a huge problem in our world. That said, I don't have 10 children. I have three. I am not raising them under any kind of religious dogma or political agenda, but rather to be free-thinking, life-valuing, rational, educated individuals (that's the goal, of course). That means that I hope they will grow up to HELP the world. If we leave the populating entirely up to the Mormons, Catholics and Muslims (ha), then were will we be? Yes, this is partly a justification, but when you HAVE children, you can't get rid of them. We do HAVE them. I think that we are probably largely open to conversation (as a discussion topic), but not to being attacked based on your precponceived ideas about parents.

John - Haha! I'm sorry to hear that you found yourself in the company of pin worms. Parenting is so glamorous, isn't it.

The Nerd - My kiddo too! I see much potential for that in the future.

§kürrý - Congrats!

Not the 13th, but my MIL practically begged my husband to change our scheduled section to another "more auspicious" date. Asian numerology.

Mine was born too, on a Fri. the 13th. Plus, I married his dad on Apr. Fool's Day. We're no longer married. It really was a joke on me.
