Comment by Pirate Bard on April 28, 2011 at 4:18pm Egan, your initial approach did not come off as a victim asking a question but as an attack against all of us who have chosen to have children. It seemed more as though you were telling all of us that we should have either never decided to have children or that we should have aborted all surprise pregnancies.
To answer you, I for one was young when I had my first two children, too young to have thought it through, unfortunately. I have always believed it to be incredibly important to raise my children respectfully. I, too, take issue when I see parents being mean to their children. I would venture to guess that many of us here also believe that respect should be a major part of being a parent. As far as choosing to have children goes, I can honestly say that I understand your confusion, since over population is a huge problem in our world. That said, I don't have 10 children. I have three. I am not raising them under any kind of religious dogma or political agenda, but rather to be free-thinking, life-valuing, rational, educated individuals (that's the goal, of course). That means that I hope they will grow up to HELP the world. If we leave the populating entirely up to the Mormons, Catholics and Muslims (ha), then were will we be? Yes, this is partly a justification, but when you HAVE children, you can't get rid of them. We do HAVE them. I think that we are probably largely open to conversation (as a discussion topic), but not to being attacked based on your precponceived ideas about parents.

The Nerd - My kiddo too! I see much potential for that in the future.
§kürrý - Congrats!
