Some finds on Netflix
If you subscribe to Netflix, they’ve just made available the first three seasons of the Backyardigans, which has a target audience of 2-7 years old. My three-year old watched the episode about the “Yeti,” (the mythical snow creature of Tibet), and the characters are arguing (in song, of course) about the Yeti’s existence.
“I say that the Yeti doesn’t really exist.”
“And I say yes it does!”
“Does not!”
“Does too!”
“Does not!”
“Does too!”
“There’s only one thing we can do instead of going round and round.
We’ve got to find what made that sound.
Going back and forth all day is no way to decide.
We should probably look outside.”
I briefly paused the movie here and took the opportunity to discuss the importance of looking for evidence to find out what’s real and what’s just pretend. (You can also relate this to Dan Barker’s book, Maybe Yes, Maybe No, about a young skeptic who gets to the bottom of a neighbor’s story about ghosts in his house, which ends up having a perfectly natural explanation).
Other finds on Netflix that my 6-year old has enjoyed is “Ape to Man,” a History Channel presentation about evolution, “Cosmos,” about the universe, biology, religion, and evolution, and of course Scooby Doo, in which the ghouls always turn out to be someone in a mask.
I know that some of us here, including me, have partners who are religious. My wife isn’t really a reader, but she loves movies, so Netflix has enabled her to watch movies such as “The Stoning of Soraya M.,” “God on Trial,” and the History Channel documentaries called “The Crusades” and “How the Earth Was Made.”

My five-year-old LOVES LOVES LOVES mythbusters. It's an all-around excellent show. Another suggestion - find Bill Nye the Science Guy on Youtube!
