Just a random thought. Isn't it funny that the vast majority of people who went to see the movie "expelled" also think that the maker (Ben Stein) is going to hell because he is no a Christian. Is that irony? I would love to hear Ben's reaction to someone asking him about this.

Yes. Thanx for the response.

I guess I have been using a more general defn of evolution. Not sure when I broadened it - perhaps during my extensive readings on emergence and self-organizing systems. I tend to believe in a reductionist view of everything, and blur the human abstraction layers we have imposed on science into a continuum.

Thanx for your response Robert. I am referring to the video posted below that specifically goes out of it's way to make the separation... perhaps they are referring to the specific Theory of Evolution by Natural (biological) Selection vs. a more general definition of evolution.

Well Johnny I suppose the people who think evolotion has nothing to do with the origin of life are those with no school science education, who have had their brains fried out with the Holey" Bible not realising it is the worst book of fiction ever written. It also includes Roman Catholics who are not allowed to question or think for themselves. They must swallow all the bullshit the church tells them with questioning. That is especially now that Pope "Bean-a-Dick" is in charge. He does not like science.

Can someone please explain to me how evolution has "nothing to do with the origin of life? I thought Dawkins has made this quite clear.

Yeah, it's the fourth movement of Beethoven's 9th, and the ending's cut off.

Luke: Beethoven's 9th, unless I'm incorrect, but It may have been the actual end, I'm having a hard time finding a better recording.

@Michell: Could you give me the name of the recording, please?

I just annoyed they cut off the end of the song. That is one of the best pieces of music ever and I really liked the recording and they cut it off at the climax. Cold. Truly cold.

I continue to be shocked at how many people talk about the self-replicating molecule as if it's the "big, shiny, new thing" with regard to abiogenesis.

Maybe fatty acids don't do anything like that upon which this video bases a version of abiogenesis (I won't get far enough in chemistry courses to find out about if it's made of lies on my own until at least the fall if not next spring), in which case I can understand ignoring it, but even then, it's still a plausible version of events (ignoring the details) for how non-life yielded life.

I find it cool to think that nonliving stuff exhibited properties that we could reasonably call "competition", and that by a simple, few, nigh-binary variations, certain features that we still recognize today were naturally selected.
