You can be sure that the religionists are going to freak out over this one.  I personally think it is long overdue, though I am not sure I know what I would do with a degree in secularism.  A degree in theology is easy - just hang out a shingle and start passing the collection plate.  This one's a bit tougher.  And I can just see what most prospective students are going to hear from his/her parents: "You're gonna major in WHAT?"

====  From Huffington Post ====

Pitzer College is adding a major in secularism, the New York Times reports. The major was added as an alternative to a the more traditional academic path of religion and theology.

The Times talked to Phil Zuckerman, a religion sociologist who proposed the department, for more information:

Studying nonbelief is as valid as studying belief, Mr. Zuckerman said, and the new major will make that very clear.

“It’s not about arguing ‘Is there a God or not?’ ” Mr. Zuckerman said. “There are hundreds of millions of people who are nonreligious. I want to know who they are, what they believe, why they are nonreligious. You have some countries where huge percentages of people — Czechs, Scandinavians — now call themselves atheists. Canada is experiencing a huge wave of secularization. This is happening very rapidly.

“It has not been studied,” he added.

Classes in the major will include topics such as “Bible as Literature” and “God, Darwin and Design in America."

.... I WILL MAJOR IN THIS.

But I don't want to live in LA. D;
Although I would have no problem with my son taking the course I have to admit its like a few others that I just wouldn't be able to see the purpose in. I guess its just me but I would like to believe I gave him all the education along this line that he needs.
There are plenty of positions for which the degree itself doesn't make a damned bit of difference.  They just want a 4 year degree in something.  Lower level management is like that.

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
