Hmm, wacky. I must be mixing up Fayetteville with Jacksonville or something.

When it comes to the privatization of Law Enforcement and such, I always worry about such private organizations being answerable more to the people holding the purse strings than to the public. I see pure Libertarianism as the route to an aristocracy. Absolute freedom is never an end point. Someone always makes a power grab.

I'm all for fiscal responsibility, just not fiscal conservatism.

Also, I'm probably a bit militant anti-Libertarianism because most of my exposure is to the extremists. The guys on our group's boards are the sort who think that all taxation should be illegal, and the only role of the government should be contract law.

Cool, I can live with that.

About 70 miles north of you. How big of a group do you guys have down there, anyway?

 New Bern here.

Wow, Richard that sucks. When xtians say "live and let live" they don't mean it; even the luke-warm ones.

I recently became active on Facebook (minimally) mostly because of my daughters, etc., but I'm just waiting for that exact same thing to happen to me. If I'm outed to my family, it'll be from Facebook for sure. I don't go there much but I feel like it 'follows' me then announces it to the world. But, I'm a bit paranoid; obviously those of us in the closet have to reason  to be!

Welcome to the new folks! It's extremely hard to be a proud & active atheist in the south. The consequences can be extremely detrimental on so many levels. Hell, even the prisons in NC are full of 'xtians'!

It depends upon the area.  In the Triangle, the Triad, and Charlotte, you may as well be in the north.

So true Lynn, claiming to 'find religion' is considered a change for the better by many of our courts. Unfortunately, I found myself on a 6mo probation for a misdemeanor drug charge ~5yrs ago & the P.O.  inquired about my status with Gawd & urged me to attend his church at almost every visit. I'm in the rural south so I always politely declined & assured him that I grew up in a xtian home & knew the Lawd quite well (both very much true!).

Heck, you'd have had a lawsuit on your hands, if you had wanted it.  Since he's acting as a representative of the state, he's endorsing religion, a clear violation of the First Amendment.  Of course you'd want to wait until after your probation is over.  Probably well after the statute of limitations, now, so no worries either way.

Joseph, in small town south, the evil web of corruption, deceit, nepotism, gossip, lies and 'good ol' boyism' is so entangled and runs way too deep for lil' ol' me right now. I hope to get back to the city soon when kids get gone. Then and only then would I even consider any unnecessary, involuntary contact with these county courts and/or law enforcement. They all went to high school together and they're all kin to the older folk; you can imagine how well it works.

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
