I'm pretty sure there's a US Supreme Court decision on point, Tim. I'll look.

Toni beat me to it, I was just on my way here to post about this "moment of silence" My daughter is also in High School, my wife is a teacher in elementary school, and I taught High School here too.  I really want this idea to fail.  I am an athiest parent in eastern North Carolina and I got a call from the Pitt County Schools automatic phone system today asking for feedback on a proposed "mandatory moment of silence" at the beginning of each school day.  We all know what that really means.  I think it would be great if you could help me to pharyngulate the poll and give really great reasons why this is a bad idea.  I'll be mobilizing everyone I can about this issue, but as you know, being an athiest in this part of the country can be pretty lonely.  Thanks for the help, here is the link to the website:  http://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/19871021104028100/site/default.asp

Pitt County Schools is thinking about starting each school day next year with a "moment of silence." I just know it's going to backfire. (My daughter is an HS student.) They have an online survey here. Opinions? Advice?

Is there not a secular or atheist student group at ECU?  I'd check through your university resources.  There might be something.

How many of us are in Eastern NC?  It seems like there are a lot of Triangle and Triad atheists here, but I'd be interested in getting a group together here in Pitt county, Greenville.  Anyway, get in touch if you are from around here, maybe we can meet up sometime.

Oh that sounds like a good plan, thank you Neil.
@Carol: I know atheism is not a religion but symbolic jewelry isn't always, or even mostly, religious.

no I didn't mean the art stuff. try the likes of lowes or home depot and check out the heavy gauge  3strandsingle core wire (twin and eartyh we used to call it in the uk). you have to strip it of course but it's a minutes work. should work out much cheaper. unless you can track down a friendly electrician or demolition guy and recycle old stuff. the disadvantage is that it will tarnish quite quickly but spray lacquer or new adventures in electro plating (actualy quite easy) would solve that.

I just hope the jewelry doesn't end up looking like the atheistic equivalent of a crucifix. After all, atheism isn't a religion.  I feel like a vampire when I see someone wearing a crucifix, particularly around his/her neck!

Copper is a good idea. I think I can get a good price at Micheal's or some place. I may just end up making the jewelry from sculpting wire. It's less expensive but it doesn't look too bad if formed right.
Thank you!

Isn't copper pretty freaking expensive nowadays, though?  Or is it just expensive relative to the dirt cheap prices it was going for, before China went high tech?
