Hey Up Shawn......what a coincidence my names Sean!! I had a look for any Bright groups setting up, I'm down in Nelson....Is it me or is NZ pretty laid back about the whole religious thing?

NZ is pretty laid back to a degree. I didn't get a job I applied for last year because of my... outspoken heathen views. On a whole though, not so bad.

There's a couple of groups up here in Auckland, you might want to have a look at (and join): http://www.nzarh.org.nz/ to see if there are some dudes down there who want to meet up.

Long story but the shortened version is: went for an interview, got called back for a second interview, did 3.5 hours of more interviews, including the GM, things were going swimmingly, then my personal blog came up. Not wanting to hide anything I gave them the address where I had, unfortunately, recently written a... scathing post on Islam.

They were not impressed, I didn't get the job, they refused to tell me why. Of course I don't know for a fact and I can only guess but it certainly feels like my opinion on religion helped the decision along.

Sadly, this is why I carefully separate my views on religion from my professional profile and will continue to do so, for a while at least.

A software development position where one might have to work with Muslims and other religious types. Not that I have a problem with this, I keep religion out of the office as a rule, except when somebody else starts something.

Either way, not a biggie, I got a much better job a couple weeks later... almost like I was meant to... heh.

Re: Shawn Hamman on his blog & job interview fail: yes that's how I feel about my own blog ATM. Currently I'm working for a "Christian" mental health organisation (I know right, lol) and have been keeping my own deconversion on the down-low for more than a year or two now. I'd love to talk freely on my blog but - damn this internet - it appears that my blog and even my profile on Atheist Nexus is too findable with a google search!

Christian mental health... there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one!

Death of a family member

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
