Maybe start some topics in the discussion forum so at least we can stick to one topic.

We should have a topic a week. So this week it's conspiracy theories. Next week... How to make the best pavlova? I like kiwi fruit on mine.

Which group? The atheist humour group?

After all that flurry of posts, guess which group is the most active out of all Atheist Nexus groups?
Where are the rest of you?

Well, now I really want to watch the movie. Perhaps I'll just read some of the links first though...

Thanks to who suggested we all just post something! turned into a possible project! :)

Just going back to Alstairs comment about getting a mental vaccine by understanding a mindset. I just really liked the comment, it made alot of sense. I suppose it all comes back down to educating people saying "this is whats out there"

I still have firm discussions with my mum about all of the videos we have talked about. She takes the "this is truth" side and I take the "have you read anything else?" side.

by purpose do you mean you had a purpose after you watched it and believed in it? because I got that same purpose when I went to church for a bit. Thing is, with a purpose you stop questioning and just have an opinion. Now I strive to allow my opinions to be changeable. The 3 words you need to be comfortable with are "I was wrong"... my boyfriend can't admit that, but thats just because he's a man and nothing to do with skepcism! :P lol

Don't feel like an idiot! I watched that the addendum aswell! I bought into that for about a week until I decided to do some research. So you did 4 days better than me! I learnt from these movies that just because something is called a 'documentary' doesn't mean it's very reliable.

There's a quantum physic's one called. "What the bleep do we know?" It's interesting and has a few ideas in it, but it's mainly all pseudoscience. i would give it a watch and then see what rebuttals of your own that you can come up with. You don't need a degree. it's good skeptic practise.

I'm with you Alastair. I watched it originally with my mum and was buying into it until the moment they mentioned Dionysus as part of the whole 'jesus thing' I turned off almost instantly. I studied Classical studies and greek mythology and dionysus wasn't considered very high and his only followers were Satyrs and meanads, never heard that he rose from the dead. Maybe a hangover, but not the dead and Zeus had ALOT more kids than just him. Hell Athena was born from his head! thats much more impressive.

The movie plays on emotions, hearing 9-11 victims phone calls before they die, it seems so logical and reasonable. But you have to step back from it all. I have a friend that works in a bank and he has a customer that only has a bank account because he needs a place to put his wages, needless to say this guy is a conspiracy theorist nut. He links 9-11, with planet x (that is going to crash into our planet in 2012 and astronomers are covering this up) with a microwave device that can change weather, control peoples minds and kill vast quantities of oceanic life, with religion and jesus crist. I know this because this guy wrote a pamphlet and gave it to my friend who sent it to me.
From this pamphlet of garbage you can extrapolate something more believable and presentable and you could probably point out all the zeist geist factors within it. I'd be happy to send it to you. The parts about planet x are all very confusing. One minute this planet is going to destroy the earth, the next he warns that you must buy radiation suits and go hide in a cave and that the rich have vast underground caverns that only the rich and important are to go when this happens, even though planet x is only slightly smaller than earth. If it did collide there would be no underground bunker big enough to stop the destruction of earth. There are alot of inconsistencies.

sorry I waffled in that last bit

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:28pm 2 Comments

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
