Wonderful next step for all - because without death we wouldn't be here - evolution relies on us being born and dying in order to make the gene changes necessary to evolve.
@Alice Ahh, I gotcha. Yeah, I could see how that would be very vexing. And I wish there was a like button on here, too! Lol!
@Jon And that's why I keep so many journals :) I want to be remembered after I die...I want my friends and family to read my thoughts, see how I experienced my life from my perspective.

@Tabitha_I noticed over my life time that the most valuable thing we leave behind after our death is our persona that exists as the knowledge of having been known by others. This is our gift of life and joy that becomes the fabric of the knowledge and experience that in turns becomes the being of another. And long after we are forgotten as individuals, we have hopefully shaped humanity for the better -- if we have allowed ourselves to do so. It is not a sorrowful thing to pass on that torch nor is it a distressing thing to find our eternal peace in that knowledge, which existing outside ourselves, does not cease because it is shared, as was our existence. Death is terrifying yet a wonderful next step for the whole of life.

I grew up in a meditation centre - it's not for everyone - and can have adverse effects for some exasperating depression and leading to anger - Sam Harris has some interesting perspectives on meditation:

Alice, your response rings sparkling bells with me. Your description sounds very comforting and full of promise. Having this life to live fully, intentionally, determined to be open to the joys and tears, the rest and the rush of living, the gift of life and knowing we are made of the stuff of stars and we will become atoms that make up new beginnings. If there is to be peace, it will start with me; it doesn't come automatically. If there is to be justice, I am one who stands with others for the flourishing of all people and all on the Earth. We find love and care and compassion by being that which we desire.
That's beautiful, Alice :) I like that. Savor every moment...it's sad, though. Most of us don't. I know I don't. I have a tendency to escape from reality, either being locked inside my own head or getting on my laptop and going through facebook mindlessly.
I've done some reading about meditation. It talks about being mindful, being fully aware and present to the moment of NOW. It's really interesting--you should look into it :)
Death is terrifying - but when you unpack it - what was it like to experience before you were conceived? That is the same experience you will have after death - it might be scary at first - but really there is absolutely nothing to fear - as there is nothing to experience. What it does point to is that we have a gift - we have this one life - we have joy, pain, sadness and euphoric experiences. Live your life to the full - enjoy each and every moment. Savoir your life, and cherish it fully for all the gamut of experience you have. Be in this present moment - because the present moment is all that you will ever have. Learn how to be content in yourself in each moment beyond the material world of what you have or having got in life. If you are hungry, accept that hunger, realise that there was no other way it could have been. If you are fed, loved and have something to look forward to, realise that this is as good as life gets. Enjoy :)
