Alexa--I hear you. I go through a similar song & dance with people. For myself, 12-step didn't work. Even though the "higher power" in the meetings was nice and amorphous, the "big book" really was not. Around here I haven't found any atheist meetings, save for Rational Recovery--which did more for my coming to terms with all that stuff. Anyway, peace to you, and you should come to AZ again!

john - i guess i'm at an age where i really don't care that other people have weird ideas - i'm not the type to try and convert to anything. i just don't bother with a person like that. shy i am saying this, i don't know. it just came up from you're mentioning the saved stupidity. i went to an atheists' AA meeting here in nyc for a while - didn't really need it, but i met my best friend there. it wasn't really a good group tho. i also just met someone the other day and told her about something or another being atheist and she got very quiet. i reassured her about myself, not wishing to make an enemy where we had to be together, but that's different than a real chum. ok. i'll stop now. (i love Arizona :)

@Alexa--It still carries the stink of supposed immorality. There are a lot of people who think of it as a behavioral and moral issue. Part of the reason AA/NA/what have you have the allure they do: Fulfilling the "need to be saved" that Christians adore.
