Naturalism is great. Why worry about some outrageous beliefs when you can enjoy the beauty of nature? We live in a beautiful place.

So much in one word. I find myself tending to agree with men like Paul Tillich when they speak of God as the "ground of being" or as being itself, then go on rightly to criticize "theistic theology." But why call it God? Why not simply refer to the power of being? The consequences to using the word "God" that you write of, Kat--they are profound and devastating. Whenever you start to talk about God, you invoke that anthropomorphic construct who speaks to individuals and grants them justification for actions that reason revolts against.

In the end, "God" as a word just smudges things too much. Not useful.

hello Kat C I agree with what you are saying. If we as athiest deny the existence of a 'God' and by ceasing to acknowledge or make any refernce to his\her then he/she will cease to exist in their minds. Simplistic but interesting.

I like your thought very much!

Sometimes it feels as though the difference between believing in God and being in awe of Nature is largely one of semantics, if it were not for all the tangible consequences of forcing the language of "God" upon the simplicity of the fact of existence.

"The only thing God can do that Nature can't is to justify the certainty of beliefs that are not demonstrably true."

Good to have this group.
For a non-theistic description of "natural spirituality" I invite members to read and comment on my new book, Life After Faith. I'm sure it won't please every freethinker (and many a theist) but it is one former minister's clearing of possible paths ahead where Nature is the obvious "common ground" for those with faith and those without.

It really is essential to differentiate naturalism as a concept within philosophy, which carries no particular political or behavioral weight, from Thomas Clark's reformulation of naturalism as a spiritual life stance. The notion that such naturalism could form a complete world view and result in a competence to judge all issues is as preposterous of reading too much into "atheism" or even "humanism".
