With a name like Hermes ... how can I not join a mythology group?

Any fans of Joseph Campbell's work?

Oops...a thread on Joseph Campbell was already posted.

Hi. this is a great way of bringing it all together, by that I mean I have noticed that most all mythologies have commonalities, and use alot of the same signs and stem around cycles. Sure they use different names for their characters which serve to pull the common people away from the truth, but when you lay them all out in front of you they all seem to be talking about astronomy and the cycles within. Am I the only one that sees some truth in mythology? No I don't believe in Thor, God, or Zeus, however though I do believe that these stories are to intricate and well thoughtout to be completely fasle. Please bare with me here... I have reason to think that from the Mayans to the Incas to the Egyptians to the Greeks to the Near east to the East to the Norwiegans to the American Indians and everyone inbetween, I think it's obvious that all of these peoples stories are based on truth, all mixed up in what appears to be a fantasy, but in reality all those stories are hundreds/thousands of years of carfull observations of the stars, sun, moon, and planets, not to mention people and all our characteristics. Alot of the greek ideals came from the Egyptians and the Near East, alot of the german ideals came from the greeks, the romans ideals came from the greeks and sparta and they all built from stolen information. (alot of it)

No I don't believe in god and never will, never have, but my logic tells me that the number 666 is a real number with a real perpose...????

That is my perspective, I hope it doesn't offend anyone, just lending a different light to the subject. :)

Interesting comment by Ashish. I am not so sure about Mickey Mouse, etc....it all depends on how religions are propagated and passed down to younger generations. Mahatma Gandhi is a good candidate, imo. Imagine an idol with with spinning wheel, spectacles, like vishnu with his conch shell Shiva with his damaram.

Hey Arron. You didn't kill the discussion wall, as you can see it has been on a sort of life support. :)

I agree with what you said about the complexity of religion, and it is far too complex for children, must be why they have sunday school... and yes it does seem to be to much for adults as well! I've had that same conversation at a thing in my area called "Grab a brew share your view", which is hosted by Kaio Church and a freethinkers group at UNI, at the end of which I was aproached by one of the church members and some of his friends. I wasn't surprised considering my lent views. It was just odd, the way in which they aproached me and looked at me.. you can tell alot by someones body language and other ways about them, anyway, that was the very thing I brought up, after he used his little mind feelers on me, picking away, I said that "I didn't feel it right to impose religion on children, after all, hear we are, adults, debating the very subject, as we have done for centuries. I said that "if it wasn't for the manipulation and brain washing of children, religion wouldn't stand a chance." And I said a few other things , like how imbarassed I am for society, and how people on both sides of the religion fence take it way too lightly; the side of religion doesn't think critically about it enough, if at all, and the opposing side laughs about it...

Oh!! I'm not so sure you want to get me started on symbolism!!! Cycles my friend!! Lunar, solar, and planetary!!! Talk about your 12,000 year old itch!!!!! Everything from the seven pointed star to the six, to the five pointed star, all has to do with astrology...

Have you ever wondered what the universe and all its cycles and paterns would look like if you drew it all out on paper??

Hope every one has a good night,

Brad

If we were to gather some stuff from the past 150 years say, and bring it all together in a book, with some anonymous people writing their thoughts on each subject, then we could create something like a modern day bible. I think if we took Hitler and Stalin, and say, Lex Luther and the Joker, we could have some villains for the book - two were real, two not - i wonder how much the stories would have evolved within just 200 years. The metaphorically,'good' characters, perhaps could be Harry Potter, Superman, Spiderman and Daredevil. Modern mythology is nothing different to ancient mythology - it is all simply representations of real life - good, bad, right, wrong, relationships.....

I also view mythology as like an ancient calender. The ancients told stories based on astronomy - they did this to recognise the seasons - so that they could tell when was the right time for harvest, etc. No matter where you go in this world - one thing remained the same, and that was the fact that ancients from all over used astronomy as a sort of calender. This resulted in thousands of metaphorical representations of the sun, and the moon and the stars, this has remained consistent throughout all cultures even though the belief systems all evolved in a slightly different way - they all are based on the exact same metaphors.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 4 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…

Anti-atheist post from an Orthdox Mormon

What do you think of this Facebook comment?

Nathan Young to Jason Torpy,

for once you and I can agree on something.  We should disrespect beliefs that are untenable such as the belief that there is no God.  Indeed for me to respect you Jason, I cannot respect your belief in non-belief in atheism.  Your atheism comes across as arrogrance, smugness, and self righteous.  Indeed after reading "An Open Letter to My Religious Friends" I penned one…
