Jazz. A wondrous delight.

I know some of us out there love jazz also. Let's hear about it. Any type, from dixie-land, big band, bop, fusion, urban, cool, whatever type you like.So pull up a chair, pull out your axe, and make this a memorable gig.

I understand. Jazz seems to require something from the listener. Yes, you can listen to it casually, but to make that really deep, emotional connection, you must be willing to sacrifice something of yourself to the music. You will be rewarded. 100 times over.

I have played saxophone since 7th grade. Picked up flute and clarinet along the way. I'm passable (depending on whom you ask). It has invariably been jazz when I play. There's just a connection there. Be well, my friend.

btw: was lucky enough to see Chic Corea at the Berkeley Jazz Fest back in the late 70s. Great!

Early spring 1977. A jazz venue in Newport News, Va. Saw Weather Report. Was fantastic, especially Jaco. I had never heard a bass played like that. Never. No wonder he came to be in such high demand from other musicians who wanted him to play with them.

After the concert, yhe guys in the group stayed and interacted with the audience. I was standing in a small group near Wayne Shorter. I played sax, so I wanted to talk with him momentarily. When I looked up, the date I was with, Paula, was standing on the small stage with Zawinal and he was hitting on her! And let's just say she wasn't exactly trying to get away from him. Pissed me off. Never did get to talk with Shorter.

Still, despite that, Weather Report remains one of my favorite groups. Oh, and we broke up shortly after that. Ah, youth. It is indeed wasted on the young.

Wow. You hung out with Jaco sorta. That's one of those memories that lasts. Date getting hit on by the band is a mixed blessing. You're with the prettiest girl, but oh wait, not anymore. lol.

For more contemporary jazz I've always been a fan of Michael Brecker and his innovative sax playing. I especially like the work he did in his group Steps Ahead.

Thinking about Ralph Towner, here's his classic piece, "Icarus," played by him, Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Slava Grigoryan. I've always loved this piece, and this is one among many memorable renditions.

Great to see so many atheist jazz-lovers. I've been playing piano since the 1960s (I'm on YouTube if you search Alan Perlman jazz piano). I share the tastes of many contributors - Miles, Trane, Bird, Bud Powell (another life cut short), and their descendants -- Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and many, many others.
