Emily, You are the only one who can assess your situation and determine whether starting a group at your HS is a good idea. My personal opinion is that it probably is not a good idea. High School life is difficult enough as it is, why make it more difficult. When you get to college you will meet a lot of other people like you and there will very likely be an atheist group at almost any college you go to. Life is much better beyond HS. Perhaps (if you can drive?) you can look for a group outside of school if one exists locally? Otherwise, you at least have this social network =)

Oh yes it doesn't take the fact away that they are doing it at all, and I think everyone has feel for the peer pressure bug, I know I did a few times in high school which are just like you said laughable now.

Hm, just because they don't realize they're being hypocrites doesn't make them any less hypocritical. But I do agree that peer pressure and being accepted are huge (and unavoidable) things in high school. Striving to fit in with people like that is laughable now, but back in the day I'm sure I did my best to remain quiet and unnoticed.

Nicole you are so right about high school being not an easy time, but I think that it has to deal with peer pressure and being accepted rather then them being hypocrites because at that age you don't think about what your saying, it's just someone that is different from what they were brought up to think because they still have there parents influence on them still, but I do agree that starting an atheist club can be hard and it can be helpful too because I to do doubt that she's the only atheist in the entire school.

High school is never an easy time. But sometimes that's just because everyone thinks that no one else feels the way you do, although I'm sure that's not the case! You could try to start an Atheist society, I'm sure there are plenty of people in your high school that feel the same way you do :) Don't let the negative words and actions of others affect you so much--you have to realize, if they were good and honest monotheists they wouldn't say such things, but since they are saying such things, they're just hypocrites ;)

Emily I so feel your pain but there are always other opportunities like you could start a group at your school or where you live so that its more convenient for you and people that live by you.

Indeed I agree I heard that there are a lot in the greater Detroit area, but also in the inner city too where I live.

Haha I think that we all have thought that we are the only ones out here.
