It really is a lose-lose situation for us. If they get better it was the result of intervention by Jeebus and thank you to the congregation for prayin' for their recovery. If things go bad, well THAT is NEVER because Gawd didn't answer those prayers.
Can you imagine a malpractice case: well your honor, I don't understand how Mrs. Jones died, I mean, the church was prayin' for her, and all of us were prayin' for her, believe me, we did everything we could!
Well you obviously did, case dismissed!

Hello......hello??? You guys still out there??? I'm a RN in Oklahoma. Guess how much fun that is! Actually, I love what I do but must agree with Mr. Davis. The reliance on god's intervention is maddening sometimes. At least 30 times a day I hear.."We're juss prayen an prayen an we juss know god's gonna heal 'im". It's really hard not ask "And how's that working out for ya so far?" It's sad, really. Dosn't anyone realize that if there was a god who truely answered prayer that NO ONE would die? Good advise from Daniel. I've suggested these very things myself. And it is galling when I get a difficult IV stick on the first try and everyone starts wailing "Thank ya Jeeeesus!" That's when I really have to bite my tongue! Jesus didn't start your IV, dumbass...I did! But....I just smile and carry on. In an environment where a nurse can be fired for being "rude" one must be careful. ........and they wonder why there's a nursing shortage! Thanks for letting me rant. I'm so glad this group is here!

If you are in a hospital setting, maybe you could suggest something like "I can ask for the chaplain to visit - they would be much better at it than I am"? Or "Do you have a pastor that you would like for me to call?"

How does everyone deal with patients who ask you to say a verbal prayer for them, right then and there? As a nurse, I feel the duty to provide comfort, but I am really uncomfortable with it.

I worked in a military lab for a few years and will be working in one again. What always got me was how patients seemed to survive on god's will, when the doctors, nurses, lab and x ray techs among others put in all the work. Otherwise I have to say the lab is awesome.

My job as a EMT actually is what brought me to Atheism. I realized from the things I see that that either: 1.God has abandoned us. 2. God is a Sadist. 3. God does not exist.
Guess what I picked? :)

welcome to all the new members :)

Lets get some discussion going - anyone got something they weant to debate?

And I know I started this group but it would be good for other members to play a big role in it- as you all know who work in medical / healthcare, the work patterns can be awful and I'm not always able to keep up with everything.
