Ah...Charles...I feel your frustration.  I'm very, very good at starting IVs and without fail...when I get a line in on an especially difficult-to-access patient the response is "Thank ya Jeeezus"......I want to tell thes cretins that Jeeezus didn't start their IV, I did, but I still need to work so I usually bite my tongue......I live in Oklahoma, so, as you can imagine...my poor tongue is just about chewed off.

OK, it happened (again; ad nauseum). I was taking care of a kid with an injured ankle. Xrays were negative. I told Mom and she said, wait for it, "Thank You Jesus". I said "jesus had nothing to do with it". Oh yes he did"was her retort. Having had enough of this simple minded babble, I said " so where was he when she fell? why didn't he prevenT that?" "So you think that he took a quick look at her ankle and decided it would be sprained and not broken?" As expected the conversation, if you could call talking to a closed mind a conversation, made a downward spiral. I wis I could let this shit lie but it just makes me grit my teeth and want to slap sense into some folk.

well now, It seems praying at the beach saved a 12 year old kid after he drowned. Glad the kid is OK but praying had nothing to do with it. Why didn’t they jump into the sea and save the kid. If god was around he would have helped. Ignorance just kills me.

The ASR [Cobalt Artificial Hip replacement] was approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2005. However, it was cleared through a regulatory pathway [loophole] that  did NOT require it to undergo clinical trials.

 

Canadians have joined USA lawsuits against DePuy.

The lawsuit claims the defendants failed to disclose or warn Canadian patients of the significant risk of implant failure. "The defendants were aware of many complaints made to the Food and Drug Administration in the United States and Health Canada regarding the failure of the DePuy implants."

Dialysis tech. in TX, buckle of the bible belt. I'm not so good at holding my tongue. We had a patient who was cramping horribly due to high fluid gain, she kept yelling, "Help me God". I told her she would be better off calling a new name, since she had already, more than likely, asked god to cure her kidney failure, her diabetes, and save her from having both legs amputated. OOPS!

We have a lot of people on here so why don't we start giving locations and roles?  If you're somewhere that you feel insecure about identifying yourself too clearly, give only as much as you like.  I'm Michael Caton, second year medical student at University of California San Diego, considering neurology, psychiatry or anesthesia.

dr.n.- Thanks for the article. I do think that fewer fundamantalists go into psychiatry since they believe, "all you need is the lord." I know of a psychiatrist where I trained who actually said this to a medical student.
