On August 14, 2009, Michael Haas was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, principally for his book George W. Bush, War Criminal? The Bush Administration's Liability for 269 War Crimes (2009)

Michael Haas was born in 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, His adoptive father was a journalist who earlier had been threatened by the Ku Klux Klan because he wrote an editorial condemning their terrorist acts against Mexican Americans in Orange County, California.

In addition to membership in the American Civil Liberties Union, he belongs to Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Progressive Democrats of America, the Stonewall Democratic Club, and various academic professional organizations, including a life membership in the International Studies Association.

Now living in the Hollywood Hills, Michael Haas has devoted his life to advancing the goal of greater respect for human rights along with the establishment of a more peaceful world. His work continues.

The End of Encyclopedias?

The radical 18th-century thinkers who proposed democracy instead of aristocracy, legislatures instead of kings, and freedom instead of tyranny, also made a revolutionary proposal about knowledge. They imagined an encyclopedia that would make all significant knowledge available to everyone.

Denis Diderot thought his pioneering Encyclopédie, published just before the French Revolution, would make people "more virtuous and more happy."

But just as this democratic dream seems to have come true, the whole idea of encyclopedias is being challenged. Andrew Schlafly, the son of Phyllis Schlafly, has created "Conservapedia," an alternative encyclopedia for conservatives. Conservapedia's home page appears to set traditional standards for inclusion: Its first "commandment" is "everything you post must be true and verifiable." Is Conservapedia "a clean and concise resource for those seeking the truth," as it claims? A glance inside Conservapedia shows something very different.

In the world of Conservapedia, and in much conservative politics today, truth is partisan. "We do not allow liberal censorship of conservative facts." What are conservative facts, as opposed to plain old facts? Let's read a few facts from Conservapedia's home page: the chair of the Democratic National Committee is a "bozo" and atheists have a zero IQ.

NOTE: I went to see this with a group from CFIwest.org .
This was a very full filling afternoon of theater. K B Solomon truly is Paul Robeson come to life passionately declaring the right to equality under the constitution.

It is rare to see such genuine passion for justice combined on stage with entertainment and music in a graceful presentation of deep sincerity and grace. The artistry of the pianist was superb as well.

Do not miss this rare opportunity to be an audience with Paul Robeson, who will not be forgotten by history. -- Gary

The BP Blowout: Too Little Safety, or Too Much?
with Keith Sewell

Keith Sewell will give a brief summary and update on the BP oil spill, and answer questions on probable causes, remediation efforts so far, and remaining steps to complete shut-off. He will also provide information about the overall progression of safety focus in offshore drilling and production, suggesting from this that we are already past the point of additional formal safety focus being counterproductive.

Keith Sewell has been oilfield commercial diving for twenty years. He took a four year pause to obtain a degree in Ocean Engineering. For the past fifteen years, he has been working for SBM Atlantia, a floating systems and production solutions company, out of Houston.
