I have been thinking a lot about my position in life as an atheist. Each of us have our own idea of what we are as an atheist but I am generally speaking as a person who was born into a world that…Continue

Living alone obviously implies a certain element of, well, being alone - albeit not necessarily loneliness. Most times, one can immerse oneself in work, a hobby, a book, or some other distraction. …Continue

Comment by Earther on December 21, 2011 at 7:22pm Thank you for the welcome. Let me tell you about my day today. I teach, so we had a gift give away at school. Since it was given by my principal I didn't refuse to go. We did not have to give a gift, it was like a game. We chose a gift off of the table and the others had an option of stealing the present or pick one off of the table. This part did not bother me to much. Here is the kicker. One of the co-workers who knows that I am atheist asks me in front of the group "how do you celebrate the Christmas holiday?" So I replied I go to my mothers house, who lives in the woods, and I go hunting. So, where is the separation of church and state?
Comment by Julie E on December 21, 2011 at 2:22pm Welcome newcomers ! Zen, I too only know a few Atheists/Agnostics. Stewart, you have more patience than I do, because I can no longer even read any of these religious things without getting completely frustrated or angry. I have tried to read many things, but I find myself getting completely bored, sad, angry, annoyed or just wanting to say "WTF" I cannot for the life of me understand how any sane person can believe this bullshit. I feel like I'm living on a strange planet all the time.

Comment by Raving Hillbilly on December 21, 2011 at 1:17pm OK so this is my first visit to this site so please forgive my being verbose. I love the story of the Eucharist. When Americans first discovered Europeans on our shore they were bringing lots of pathogens including a new "God Virus". (Thank you Darrel Ray for that metaphor.) The pious Spanish found the human sacrifice going on among the Mexica Indians to be barbaric and demanded that instead they substitute the cannibalism of the Eucharist. Fascinating that they seemed unable to note the similarities. (Just in case anyone doesn't have a Xian background, the Catholics believe in the literal transformation of the bread and wine into Jesus' body and blood, hence cannibalism.) OK so I find religion and its resulting absurdities and even barbarism to be a bit humorous.
Comment by Raving Hillbilly on December 21, 2011 at 1:07pm I gotta comment on the Judeo Xian bible. It is remarkably tedious but worth reading. I get too easily distracted because of the necessity for note taking. This seems to be necessary to keep track of all the absurdities, contradictions, atrocities, and etc. OK so maybe I want to read too rigorously. If one is to argue with Xianity one only need look at the primary tenets of the religion. i.e. "God" is omnipotent, omniscient, and loving. This combination is of course ridiculously and absurdly impossible. Just add in the "heavenly father" torturing his "son" to death to appease himself for the imperfections he created in us, and then calling it "generous love."

Comment by Earther on December 20, 2011 at 8:05pm Read the bible? I tried and I made it upto where Abraham was begeting all those rug rats. I couldn't take it anymore. A good history is a true history, if the truth you seek is how people believe in lies then the bible is a good place to start. Is there a truth of mental situations, maybe.
