Counselors of all types have experience working with people from all walks of life, and they've seen many different types of relationships and helped them through it. I wouldn't dismiss a church counselor or even a pastor out of hand. They may have some personal opinions that are at odds with a non-believer, but most of them are truly kind and generous people.

If the problem is religion, then how will a church based counselor help? They base their counseling on religion, the book, and the so called god's point of view.  I hope your religious spouses would look past the dogma and see what's in front of them.

Yeah, even a church based counselor might help, although they might go all 'unequally yoked' on you.

Damn man. I feel for you. My wife recently brought up the religion thing as part of a list of problems in our relationship. I really think that that list was really a rationalization for her mind being somewhat already made up that we should split. I believe the real source of the problem is that we let ourselves grow apart. I am trying to remedy that now, and I think she is on board, but I never know. Anyway, I took responsibility for my share of the blame and vowed to change some things. But when I told her I can't make myself believe, she says, "of course you can, that's why I believe, I chose to."

Things have since subsided on that front so I'm feeling hopeful but the not knowing how religious she is feeling from one day to the next is kind of rough.

I got into a huge fight with the wife on Easter. Topic of discussion "Do I really believe their is no god?" Apparently my wife thought it was just a phase, or that I would snap out of this soon. Religious people really don't understand that some people are really convinced that god is imaginary.
Now she is considering whether she really wants to live with someone who doesn't believe.
Her comments were that if I believe she is wasting her time at church then what do we have?
Terrible shame... I tried really hard to let her know that this thing was real for me. I really don't believe in god. Don't know where we're going from here.

How I miss being a theist!!!! I miss how I followed after pasta' and did everything he told me to do. Maybe I should go back and experience the guilt and shame tactics for money.

Michelle you have my sympathy as well. Not much I can say. Its a tough choice to make. Here's another case where religion messes everything up. I too hope for the best no matter what you decide.
