@Joseph, I was a high schooler in the 70s, the percentage was nearing 50%, but I have to include hash in that number. In my teens, and I was a "straight" student, who didn't smoke cigarettes, I had more access to Moroccan hash than to any marijuana!
I'm also eager for the entire concept of "gateway drugs" to recognise that nicotine is the first gateway drug. In the 70s, smoking had not yet been banned in schools, certainly half the population were nicotine addicts, and the cannabis was on top of that. That's the reason I waited til later in life to start cannabis, since I couldn't handle the nicotine mixes.
