Comment by Ian Mason on February 24, 2012 at 8:31am To follow up my last post. Danish police are now to pay 1.7 million kroner (convert to your local currency) to those unlawfully detained at COP 15. Those "preventative" detentions have been judged illegal. That's not a lot of money shared between the 250 who sued the Plod but the principle has been established. More of those detained may also follow suit and make claims.

Comment by TNT666 on December 27, 2011 at 1:56pm I'm so sorry, my mind sometimes places Denmark, though on European soil... more with Scandinavian culture!
I was really only referring to those French/Italian/Spanish cops. :)
I recently called 911 to save a man on a ski trail from hypothermia at 3am... they insisted I was a crank call... I had to insist back, with hefty words, in order for them to get out there, find the guy, bring him to hospital... saved his life... but it was so 'hard' for them. :(
Comment by Ian Mason on December 27, 2011 at 7:53am Don't you believe it, TNT. The police in Denmark is composed of society's stupid and lazy but when they get the chance they go wild. Plus the force is used as a political instrument. When the climate summit COP15 was held in Copenhagen any demonstrators were detained "preventatively" as they assembled. Perhaps someone was afraid that a bunch of lettuce-munching tree-huggers would raise their voices where politicians might hear them. Those who suffered the worst were 3 Greenpeace members who were able to walk straight past high-level police security into the official banquet and raise a banner. These "terrorists" recieved prison sentences.
You can't get a copper to come out if you're in the process of being burgled though. I know that from personal experience. That happened at my place of work, a nursing home, and the duty officer said: "you don't expect us to come, do you? Don't you think we've got other things to do?"
Comment by TNT666 on December 27, 2011 at 3:55am It's been on for the longest time in Canada, USA police are really only starting down the path of absolute power. It's one preference I have for European cultures, their police are so weak!
I like weak police, it's how they should be. Strong police is a sign of a miserable society.
Comment by Chris G on December 27, 2011 at 3:33am Here's an article from the NYT's When the Police Go Military
RIOT police officers tear-gassing protesters at the Occupy movement in Oakland, Calif. The surprising nighttime invasion of Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, carried out with D-Day-like secrecy by officers deploying klieg lights and a military-style sound machine. And campus police officers in helmets and face shields dousing demonstrators at the University of California, Davis with pepper spray.
Is this the militarization of the American police?
