The above piece was written for thenewhumanism.org, an affiliate of Harvard Univ., on the revival of the Epicurean philosophical tradition. I'm sharing it here because a lot of the therapeutic work that Epicureans did revolved around helping people overcome the vestiges of fear-based religion and many of you might find it useful. The webpage for our group is societyofepicurus.com.
Comment by Idaho Spud on January 2, 2013 at 11:38am Thanks Ed. I'd never heard of them before, but I found some of his letters and read them. What an excellent job he does!
Comment by Susan C on January 1, 2013 at 7:34pm Wow Jason I am so happy for you... I was indoctrinated for about 30 years too and it was hard to walk away from, but the relief is indescribable... We can be "Good without god"... :)
Richard, that verse it actually so stupid it's humorous.
It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Yes I agree Richard that the bible is so horrid that you can see why humans are so messed up. The bible is just not ethical. Why do people follow that crap? Ok - I will click on that link.
Comment by Richard Goscicki on January 1, 2013 at 1:07pm Steph, I was just thinking about that piece. All Barbara did was read the Bible and use a magic marker on all the stupid and/or crazy quotations. It’s beautiful in its simplicity.
Here’s a favorite of mine I was thinking about:
Deut. 25:11,12 - A woman who seizes a man's genitals, even to defend her husband from an attacker, must have her hand cut off.
What weird mentality could come up with a moral directive like the above? Let me get this straight, I asked my self. My wife and I sitting by the fireplace enjoying the pleasures of connubial life, when the door opens and some intruder, some guttersnipe, barges in.
You, being closer to the door, bravely jump up to confront the trespasser and by accident in the heat of the turmoil, happen to grab his dick! I then jump up and hit the blackguard with a frying pan that just happens to be handy to fry hot dogs in the fireplace.
Knocked out cold, we blow the whistle; the authorities come and carry the malefactor off to jail.
But then by the Bible’s direction (it is the word of God, you know, so I must obey) I sadly say, “I’m sorry, my dear, but Deuteronomy 25: 11,12 commands me to you’re your hand off at the wrist so you won’t be able to grab any more dicks, (and if it were a big one, schlongs. Yiddish can be so handy sometime.)
No wonder human history is so screwed up. There’s no moral guide other that this Bible horseshit.
If anyone would like to read Barbara’s entire compilation, it’s the epilogue to Mirror Reversal. Click on the “Atheist Novel” to the right. It’s worth five bucks just to read the entire list. It doesn’t get any funnier and crazier than this. Albert Camus had it right, “The world is surreal.”
Thanks Richard for posting bible morality. The bible has no morality as anyone who reads it can clearly see.
Comment by Chris Loren on December 17, 2012 at 12:07am Love the title....Life after Christian is way better
Cool Richard I will look into buying that book ans thanks for all the posts.
Comment by Richard Goscicki on July 17, 2012 at 11:52am Del, Thanks for the comment. Barbara's allowed me to use Bible Morality as an epilogue to Mirror Reversal. Just click on the "Atheist Novel" ad to the right. "Most information and entertainment you could possibly buy for five bucks."
I told Barbara, "I love it. It knocks them on the head with their own beliefs." lol
Comment by Del Watts on July 17, 2012 at 10:54am Hi, new here...and I just want to say, the content in the comment below about "Bible Morality" has blown my mind!..I had no idea :\

Hello fellow atheists! I have joined this site in an attempt to find other rational individuals, such as myself, and to promote a current charity drive that I am trying to get going for the Oklahoma tornado victims. I have managed to get many groups from around my area, including the Beyond Belief Foundation to back me on this endeavor.
I am located in Newnan, Ga and have my own atheist group entitled "Coweta County Atheists". I am currently being backed by Spaulding Co.…

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film. The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons. He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"! .
No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes. 'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands. Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…
