What Soft Drinks are Doing to Your Body

Soda, pop, cola, soft drink — whatever you call it, it is one of the worst beverages that you could be drinking for your health. As the debate for whether to put a tax on the sale of soft drinks continues, you should know how they affect your body so that you can make an informed choice on your own.

Soft drinks are hard on your health
Soft drinks contain little to no vitamins or other essential nutrients. However, it is what they do contain that is the problem: caffeine, carbonation, simple sugars — or worse, sugar substitutes — and often food additives such as artificial coloring, flavoring, and preservatives.

A lot of research has found that consumption of soft drinks in high quantity, especially by children, is responsible for many health problems that include tooth decay, nutritional depletion, obesity, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Read the rest here. I don't drink that many soft drinks any more, but I do consume a lot of sugar in the form of chocolate and ice cream. Personally, I have no faith in sugar substitutes at all.

Nothing really new in this article. Although it's worth repeating again and again.

Processed fruit juices aren't great either. I know a woman who was concerned about her near-obese son who couldn't lose weight - until she replaced his orange juice with fresh water.
I drink a lot of water, actually. That and coffee, and until recently, alcohol too. I have maybe 4 soft drinks a month now, and that's it. I seldom drink juice -- too sweet and too acidic for me.
If you need to unwind, have a glass of red wine :-)

Alcohol has more calories than fat, protein, or carbohydrates. I think it is measured in grams, and carbs and protein have like 5 calories per gram, fat has 7, and alcohol has 9 (something like that).

Unless, of course, you have a drinking problem. In that case, the ice cream is probably a better choice despite its caloric profile.
Can I have special dispensation that I haz to have the caffiene to survive grad school? Pwease?

Honestly, I know the stuff I consume is oftentimes extremely crap. However, I find that thinking churns through calories at roughly the same rate as karate training (based entirely on the levels of starving hungry I experience during the day). I ignore the nutritional value of foods and buy what gets me the best calorie+taste/cost ratio for feeding the brain parasite during the day. Then I eat vegetables for dinner and hope the anti-oxidants mop up the worst of it.
You know, I think some of that has to do with the fact that when you study you are using your eyes to read, and I believe that the eyes use up more caloric energy than any of the other senses--at least that's what I've heard.
Well, in that case, it would really be the brain. Taking up 20% of your caloric intake while being less than eight pounds in an easily over 100-pound body, the brain sucks up a great portion of energy. Compound this with the lack of motion generally associated with study and general thought and with the increase in brain activity involved in effort-filled thinking, and the portion of the energy used by the body that's used by the brain increases.
Because of carbonation, soda is acidic, and along with caffeine, even more acidic. If you have acid reflux, soda is one food to stay away from. Searing pain is a very effective way to stay off certain foods. I don't drink much soda although I do once in awhile like ginger beer and Jones cream soda. Coke, pepsi, mountain dew, and energy drinks, I stay the hell away from.
I usually get the diet lemonade at restaurants, and then I water it down 'cause it's too strongly flavored. >.>

I rarely drink sodas any more, and the last time I had a sprite, it was too syrupy for me. Mostly I drink crystal light, propel, orange juice, and water.
